First Generation
1. Simon CUMMINS was born about 1820, probably in Inch, Borris, Co. Carlow, Ireland.
The data used to compile this genealogy of Simon Cummins' family was contributed by Pamela Cummins Thompson, Carol Phillips Tilton and Ellen Flood Cummins, of Simon's direct family line, and by Carlow Cummins researchers, Monica Tanner and Susan Clement. The information presented here is copyrighted, and cannot be used for any purpose without express written consent of all the authors, and may not be re-produced, except for personal non-commercial genealogical research. If you have a connection to this family, please let us know.
NOTES: Simon and Eliza lived in Inch, in the Roman Catholic parish of Borris in County Carlow. The parish registers for Borris are missing the years 1813 through 1824. Unfortunately, this is the time period that we expect Simon to have been born and baptized, and therefore, there is no record found to date of the names of his parents. It seems likely, based on his residence, his own given name and the given names used for his children, that he was related in some way to the family descended from Simon and Catherine (Ryan) Commins, who also lived in the parish of Borris, close by to Inch. Simon named his oldest son Walter, which, if he followed tradition, may indicate that this was his father's name as well. Simon and Catherine had a son Walter, who is a likely candidate, since he and his wife Margaret Carty were having children during this time period, and their known children were Mary, Margaret, John, Bridget, Johanna, Catherine and Mathew. It would be more than likely that Walter would name one of his older sons Simon, after his father. Further research in Irish records will be necessary to determine the family connection, as well as to discover the families of this Simon's children who may have remained in Ireland.

NOTES: from Monica Tanner: Regarding Matthew Cummins and Bridget Coady Cummins' tombstone in Ballymurphy and the siblings and children of this couple:
Bridget Coady was from Goolin about 1.5 miles from Inch in the parish of St. Mullins. Matthew and Bridget had a daughter Elizabeth who settled in IL (your notes). The tombstone lists John J, Christy, James and Walter. Matthew Cummins (1851-1916) had a sister Margaret (1849-?) and she married a Philip Cummins and some of her descendants still live in Inch/Ballymurphy. I have a sketchy outline of two of Margaret and Philip's children. Matthew also had a sister Bridget Cummins Brennan who settled in N B and two known brothers Sam (Simon) and James F who settled in Iowa.

NOTES: Research of Monica Tanner. Info from "An Honourable Independence, the Irish Catholic Settlers of
Johnville, Carleton County, New Brunswick," by William Patrick Kilfoil and Mary Kilfoil McDevitt. She settled in
New Brunswick. KILFOIL: "Bridget hailed from Ballymurphy, Ireland, probably in County Carlow. It is believed
that she was the daughter of Christopher and Mary Commins. Bridget was crippled with arthritis for much of her
married life. She and William are buried in the Johnville cemetery."
KILFOIL: Family tradition holds that William and Bridget knew each other in Ireland. The marriage is believed to
have taken place by proxy in 1889. Exactly where the proxy marriage was performed is something of a mystery;
some of her descendants maintain it was in Portland, Maine, others say Sioux City, Iowa, and others, Montana.
Bridget had apparently not yet arrived from Ireland, and for some reason, the marriage had to go ahead.
TANNER: William and Bridget met in New Brunswick. She took off for Iowa, and he went after her. [It seems
likely that she may have gone with her brothers, James and Simon, to Iowa, They lived in Sioux City, Woodbury Co. IA. According to census information they immigrated to Iowa sometime between 1885 and 1888. - S. Clement]

From Carol Tilton: His death certificate lists birth date as 9/6/1864. When his wife Anna died, Sam held her and
would not give her up. The family had to force him to relinquish her body so that they could prepare her. He was so
heartbroken that he never remarried. According to his brother James' obituary, he and James immigrated to Canada
with another brother and a sister (Bridget) in 1878. They came from Canada to Woodbury Co , Iowa in 1884, although there is some evidence that Sam may have lived in Omaha, Nebraska before moving to Sioux City. There was a Samuel Cummins in Omaha in the 1890 City Directory, living with a John Cummins, saloon owner.

Simon and Anna had the following children:
+ 30 M i. Walter Joseph CUMMINS was born on 4 Apr 1893. He died on 3 Jun 1977.
31 F ii. Mary Ellen CUMMINS was born on 16 Apr 1894 in Sioux City, IA. She died before 1900.
NOTES: Research of Carol Phillips Tilton and Pam Thompson.
From Carol Tilton: Possibly daughter born here. 1910 census indicates that 8 children were born to Anna, but only
five living which were: Walt, Ray, Ceal, Toot, Agnella. Eleanor (1911) and John (1914)
weren't born yet and James Vincent had already died. Which means that two children were
probably born between Walt and Ray. I have a baptismal record of Mary Ellen Cummins DOB:
4/16/1894 and baptized at St. Mary's Help of Christians, Sioux City on 5/6/1894 by Rev. T.
Treacy. Her Godparents were James F. and Eliza Cummins. James F. was Sam's brother. I
wonder who Eliza Cummins was? Would the Grandmother also be her Godparent? Wouldn't
she also need to be at the Baptismal? There is no record of Mary Ellen being buried at Calvary
Cemetery with the rest of the family. She may be located at another part of the cemetery not
researched. [Also, the 1900 census states Anna had 5 children, 3 living, so this supports the
theory that two additional children were born between Walter and Charles, already deceased
before 1900.]

was something about her, and the family felt that she would never live long." When Agnella
died, she was declared dead, prepared and laid to rest in her coffin in the parlor of the Cummins
house. Agnella sat up and said, "I've seen Jesus Christ" and laid back down again dead. Ceal
immediately passed out and was caught in the nick of time by her brothers, Walt and Ray.
