NOTES: correspondence great-granddaughter, 30 Nov 2002, "Saw your messages about James Cummings and wife, Nora. James was my great grandfather and he did live in Jersey City. He had a son named Lawrence who was my grandfather. Lawrence married Agnes Funk and they had seven children: James, (my father), Joseph, Lawrence, Jack, Walter, Frank, and Mary. Mary is the only sibling still living, although all the wives except one are very much alive. I have 15 first cousins from this part of my family. I am thrilled to hear about James Cummings as he is the one part of my family who was the "mystery Man." I had little or no info on him before he came to America, and no idea about siblings."
Email dated 1 Dec 2002: I'll give you what I had from my own records on James Cummings. He died on October 31, 1919 in Jersey City. No parents' names were on death certificate. According to the local newspaper, The Jersey Journal, he was buried from St. Joseph's Church. He was listed as having belonged to the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. His wife Nora Madden Cummings died March 26,1918 at 57 years of age. James was listed as 70 years of age upon death. Both Nora and James are buried in Holy Name Cemetery in North Arlington in plot M102 A. According to the 1890 census, James and Nora lived at 346 Henderson St. Jersey City where their son Lawrence was born. From notations I have from a now deceased aunt, Lawrence had an Aunt Ann. He is also buried at Holy Cross Cemetery Block 25, Section F Tier 100. Other information I have is from the 1887 Jersey City directory, a John and Joseph Cummings both lived at 343 Henderson Avenue. Lawrence was living in Bayonne at 83 West 50 St. at the time of his death on June 13, 1945. I have Lawrence's birthday as Jan. 16, 1886. I found a notation that James was living at 100 Van Reypen St. Jersey City in 1918, occupation yardmaster. I just found an index card which says this about James:born County Carlow, father a pharmacist in Ireland, settled in Jersey City., had a brother named Lawrence and a "son" named John J. Could this perhaps be the nephew? I don't know where this information came from since I've had it for a long time, sorry.
In 1907, James was the sponsor listed on the ship manifest for his nephew John Cummings emigrating from Ireland. James was listed as uncle and his address was given as Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City NJ.
BAP: RC parish register of Tullow, parents James Cummins and Bridget Doyle of Newtown. Sponsors wereMichael Doyle and Ellen McDonald.
