Ireland Civil Registration - Marriages

Civil Registration in Ireland for all Protestant Marriages began in April 1845 and for Roman Catholic Marriages in January 1864. The marriage indexes list the name of one of the individuals of the couple, the Poor Law Union where the marriage was registered, and the volume and page of the registration record. All variations of spellings have been checked in the indexes. Since some Poor Law Unions overlap with other counties, the marriage in the index may have occurred outside of Co. Carlow, but there is no way to tell this from the index. It may be possible to cross-check some of these marriages with the LDS on-line IGI records. With the information listed in the index, microfilms can be ordered from the LDS Family History Library which contain copies of the Registration Records, and which will include the full date, town or townland, names of both individuals of the couple, their ages, marriage status, occupation, parents names, father's occupation, and the witnesses to the marriage. The LDS Family History Library holds microfilms of Civil Registration marriage records through 1870, and indexes from 1845 to 1958. These references can be also used to order records from the General Records Office in Dublin.
