Griffith's Primary Valuation of Tenements, circa 1852 Griffith's Primary Valuation was a tax record. It listed the names of the occupiers of each town and townland, the name of the landlord (the immediate lessor), description and value of the property and its size in acres. Griffith's valuation can be used as a census substitute, listing the tenant/occupant of each holding or lot of land. Entire classes are offered in the intricacies of interpreting the information that the valuation listings can provide! A few points that I have learned along the way: 1) The "Ord. S." number refers to the number of the Ordinance Survey map that was created to accompany the valuation. These maps are available at the Valuation Office in Dublin, and show in specific detail the location of every land holding, building, road and other geographical features. The exact location of an ancestor's home can be determined from these maps.; 2) an occupant with "in fee" listed as "immediate lessor" indicates that the individual owned the land; 3) an average cottage with thatched roof and two rooms was valued at 10 shillings; 4) the term "offices" in a description refers to outbuildings and outdoor facilities; 5) an individual who seems to be wealthy in terms of land value, but who lives in a rather small house below the expected level, may be living in the ancestral home. The listings below are the completed transcriptions of townlands that had a Cummins as an occupant. I have transcribed the whole townland so that neighbors, and perhaps relatives, can be identified; except in the case of the large towns, such as Carlow and Bagenalstown, for which only the Cummins occupants and lessors are transcribed. The index to the location of each Cummins individual is listed on another page. The area of each holding is listed in "acres-rods-perches." The values of land and buildings is given in "pounds-shillings-pence." The valuation listings, as below, are widely available on microfiche.
