Church
of Ireland Parishes
The United Diocese of Cashel and Ossory
THE DIOCESE OF LEIGHLIN
Of a total of 1,643 Church of Ireland parishes, the registers of over a thousand were destroyed when the Four Courts was bombarded at the start of the Irish Civil War in 1922. While there are surviving copies and extracts of many of the destroyed registers, it is the unfortunate reality that a large number of Church of Ireland registers no longer survive. Where a register or copy survives, it may be found in one or more of the following
locations. Registers for the Republic of Ireland are less centralized. The main options for the location of a register are as
follows:
- Parish of origin
- The Representative Church Body Library
- The National Archives
Church of Ireland registers commence earlier than those of the Catholic Church and non-conformist Protestant churches. Most therefore will date from the mid to late 1700s or the very early 1800s. Unlike Roman Catholic registers, a baptism in the Church of Ireland may take place several weeks or months after the birth of a child and hence is not necessarily a satisfactory substitute for date of birth. Note that non-Catholic marriages were recorded by the State from 1845 when general registration was introduced. Up to 1845 the Church of Ireland issued marriage licenses. While not all those marrying in that Church obtained a license, the surviving Indexes are a useful source for identifying the year of such a marriage.
