Kellistown Parish

from the "Association for the Preservation of the Memorials of the Dead, Ireland" Journal for the year 1902, page 146, Killistown Parish;

Here is a large ruined church dedicated to St. Patrick, and said to have been built by him. It formerly belonged to the ancient family of Cummins, a name still surviving. There are several of that name interred in the church, whose vaults are still remaining, though there is but one whose inscriptions is intelligible; it is as follows: -

"Hoc [sic] Jacet Sub Lapide Hugo Mac Cummins 1603." [from Seward, 1795].

Dr. Ryan corrects the above thus - [Ryan, 1833]. "Hic Jacet -- De HVGO MAC CVMYN -- Dom De Kellistown CVM----"

[John Ryan published the book History & Antiquities of the County of Carlow in 1833. Some of the memorials recorded in 1833 probably do not exist today. At the time these were recorded by John Ryan he selected only a small few, mostly dating back to the 1600's and 1700's.]

Observations Upon Kellistown Cemetery, by John Aughney, P.P.

This graveyard is situated on the brow of Kellistown Hill. It lies about five miles south-east of Carlow Town. It can also be reached conveniently from Tullow along the main Tullow-Muinbeag road.
The graveyard itself, though small, is most interesting.
On site are the remains of two churches form different historic periods. The side wall of the older church forms part of the boundary wall of the graveyard. At one corner of the cemetery we find a small church which served once as a school.
The tombstones themselves are good quality and elaborate "In Memory" erections, commemorating various well-known families from a wide area around Kellistown, over the last couple of centuries.
