BEWARE all fifth class pupils, the eyes of the country are firmly on you - puff at your peril!

Yes, it's back, the programme which aims to stop the county's children becoming addicted to the dreaded weed - Smoke Free Carlow - has returned for year two.

The programme is a pilot project begun nationally last year in Carlow. The idea is to delay the onset of smoking among young people and to encourage healthy active lifestyles.

This year the project will continue to follow the pupils of fourth class who signed up to become "smoke free kids" last year. As these young people move on into fifth class the project continues with lots of activities and fun planned for year two of Smoke Free Carlow.

The project is co-ordinated by the Health Promotion Department of the SEHB, with 38 Carlow schools and a total of 626 children involved.

The success of last year was largely due to the enthusiasm and support which the project received from the Principals, 4th class teachers and, of course, the children themselves.

From the feedback received from those involved last year, the project was both enjoyable and informative, triggering much discussion in the classrooms. This year the lessons will, hopefully, prompt some more interesting discussions, while there are plans to hold information evenings for parents and to provide support for adults who wish to quit smoking.
