Dunlavin Dún Luáin

ST. Nicholas of Myra Church was full to capacity on Tuesday, June 22, for a special Mass to honour the retirement of Mary Roche, vice-principal of Dunlavin National School.

John O'Reilly, on behalf of the parents, thanked Mary for her 36 years' service to the school and wished her and her family every happiness in the future. Margaret Birchall made a presentation on behalf of the parents.

April Fitzpatrick and Niamh O'Byrne made a presentation on behalf of the students. Kay Hogan represented the board of management while Tommy Brennan and children sang.

The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Michael Murphy. Florence Grace will replace Mary as vice-principal.

ART: The winners of the arts festival secondary schools art and short story competition were: Senior art - 1, Claire Whelan, Dunlavin; 2, Hazel Fitzpatrick, Valleymount; 3, Anne Lynott, Dunlavin; junior - 1, Stephen O'Mara, Crookstown; 2, Melissa Murphy, Dunlavin; 3, Karen Miley, Hollywood; short stories - 1, James Grace, Rathsallagh; 2, Helen Bermingham, Ballon; 3, Barbara Dunne; poetry - 1, Nick Jackman, Coolkenno; 2, Frances Cummins, Carlow; 3, Vincent Howard, Baltinglass. This competition was sponsored by the Kildare Nationalist.
