Over 150 members, supporters and invited
guests attended Burrin Celtic's dinner and presentation of awards held
in Rathcrogue House, Carlow, on Friday night, June 9. The centre piece
of the night was the presentation of trophies and medals won by the club
during the past year.
Addressing the gathering Chairman Seamus
Cummins said that he was proud of the club's achievements during
the season which had just finished. The Club had won three major honours
- The Carlow Cup, The Div. 4 Cup and the Youths 'B' Cup and these
trophies along with the Carlow Shield and the FAI Junior Cup (Carlow
Area) won by the club late the previous season adorned the top table.
The Chairman praised the members and supporters who had put so much
effort into the weekly fundraising venture and urged them to keep up the
good work. The club now boasts a healthy bank balance, he said, and the
acquisition of a playing field is now just around the corner.
The announcement of the winners of the
club's annual awards were eagerly awaited. The winners in the various
sections were selected by the players themselves by secret vote and
there was full agreement that to be chosen as best by ones fellow
players is the ultimate honour. The overall award went to Ronan Kelly,
Ballon-Hill, - an athlete of distinction both on the soccer and GAA
field. Tom Nolan, Knockdoorish, a former winner of the overall award was
the choice as the second team's top player while another man equally at
home on the soccer or GAA field, Matty Dowling, Ballon-Hill, won the
Youths Award.
However the most popular winner of the
night was Alice Nolan, Laragh, who made her own little bit of history
when she became the first female to be selected as The Clubperson of the
Year. Alice has been associated with the club since its foundation and
is a leading force behind the fundraising venture to purchase the
playing field.
The trophies were presented by Fr. Edward
Whelan, PP, and Dan McDonald and Seamus Payne from the Carlow League.
Secretary, Seamus Dowling acted as MC during the presentations.
