First Generation

1. Arthur CUMMINS was born about 1790 in Co Carlow, IRL. He died in the Portland neighborhood of Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY. He was buried in the Portland Cemetery, Louisville, KY.

NOTES: Information about the family of Arthur Cummins was provided through the research of Robert L. Goodin of Lebanon, KY [rlgoodin@kih.net]. Some of this material was collected and written down by his mother and grandmother, and is based on their own knowledge and recollections of family members and the oral family history that was passed on to them.
Baptisms of their children were recorded in the register of the Roman Catholic parish of Ballon; their residence given as Ballykealy. There were Cummins sponsors for some of the children, who might have been siblings or other near relatives of Arthur.
In the Tithe Applotment Books for the parish of Fennagh in Co Carlow, there was an Arthur Cummins living in Ballykealy in 1825 and 1833. There were two properties listed for an Arthur Cummins in Ballykealy in the tithe book, the first was 7 acres 1 rod 12 perches, and the second was 1 acre 3 rods 32 perches. It is unknown if there was only one man or two named Arthur Cummins living there at the time. There was also a Charles Cummins listed in the tithe book for Ballykealy. Only one Arthur Cummins was still living in Ballykealy at the time of Griffith's Valuation about 1852, and was the only Arthur Cummins in Co. Carlow at the time. There was no Charles listed in Ballykealy at the Griffith’s Valuation. According to the Valuation, Arthur Cummins leased a house and offices worth 10 shillings from John J. Lecky.
Notes written by Robert Goodin: "Arthur Cummins was born in Ireland in the early 1800s. He married his wife, Ellen (Nellie) Whallen, there in the 1820s. They were the parents of eleven children, four sons and seven daughters. Their son, Richard, came to the United States when he was 18 years old. Eventually the whole family moved to this country at a later time.
"The last of their children to leave Ireland was Winifred Cummins who had entered the convent at age sixteen. She was known as Sister Ita in the religious life.
"Arthur Cummins and his wife Ellen came to the United States in 1855 and located in New Jersey for a while, but later moved to Louisville, Ky., where they remained during the rest of their lives."
"The father and mother came over after three or four of their children came. They lived in L-ville Ky and New Albany Ind where they died and are buried (Ind). Richard's dau. Margaret b.8/22/64 d.7/15/1940 was my Godmother, Aunt Mag's husband was Wm.Taylor Mattingly d.6/1/1926. They lived in L-ville along with Aunt Lizzie Gardener, Uncle Pat. OBIT
: From RLG-The following is a newspaper article concerning her death.
"Died Suddenly, Relatives here have been notified of the death of Sister Ita Cummins which occurred at Loretto Convent, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, on the night of March 23, 1904. The deceased had quite a severe spell last January and her death at that time was hourly looked for, but a change for the better was followed by her entire recovery. All the day just preceding her death, she appeared to be in the best of health and attended to her duties as was her habit in a most faithful manner. About eleven o'clock on the nightr of March 23, she was seized with a spell of coughing which was not violent, however. She arose and went to the toilet room and there was stricken with apoplexy, death following in a short while. Sister Ita had been a most faithful servant of God and was assuredly awarded the glorious crown that awaits those who are faithful unto death.
"Sister Ita was a sister of the late Richard Cummins of Loretto, this county and was born in County Carlow, Ireland, seventy-seven years ago. She entered a convent in Ireland at the age of sixteen and was the last of her family to leave her native soil for America, where she established a branch house at Niagara Falls under the name of Ladies of Loretto. Branch houses of the Community were also established at Stratford and Hamilton. At the latter place she celebrated her golden jubilee February 2, 1905 [sic, should be 1903] where she remained until her death. Her remains were interred in the convent cemetery at Hamilton. Deceased was an aunt of Mrs. W.J. O'Daniel (Mary Ellen Cummins Abell-O'Daniel) of this city [Lebanon, KY]."

Second Generation

3. Mary CUMMINS (Arthur) was bap. on the 26 Aug 1821 in the RC parish of Ballon, Co. Carlow, IRL.

NOTES: Research of Robert Goodin, KY rlgoodin@kih.net. She married a Eustace.
Note from Evelyn G. Crume, June 9, 1976: "Five Walsh children in St. Louis on this line. I continue to receive Christmas cards from Mrs. Robert Kibler (Peggy Walsh) and her sister Mary Jane Walsh Kohler. They have a sister Tommy and had another sister Marita who is deceased. Tommy has a son, and Mary Jane has a son 20 years old last Christmas time."

The family notes of Robert Goodin indicate that these Walsh children were grandchildren of Mary Cummins Eustace, from a daughter of hers named Mary Eustace Walsh. Based on her birth year of about 1882, Mary was obviously a granddaughter of Thomas and Mary Eustace and not their daughter. However, it has not been determined who Mary's parents were.

OBIT: Published in the Lebanon KY Enterprise at the time of his death.
"Mr. Richard Cummins, a prominent citizen of the County (Marion), died at his home at Loretto last Saturday, July 4, 1903 at 3:40 P.M. of paralysis. His interment took place at St. Vincent Cemetery, New Hope, Monday, July 6, after solemn Requiem Mass celebrated by Rev. T.J. Jenkins, assisted by Father Buckman of New Haven, G.A. Vantroostenberghe of Holy Cross and J.A. Hogarty of Lebanon.
"Seventeen years ago, deceased was stricken with paralysis, three years later he suffered another stroke and since that time has grown gradually worse until death relieved him. His patient resignation during all these years of suffering was something remarkable, for during all that tie he was never heard to murmur a complaint.
"Richard Cummins was born in County Carlow, Ireland, May 8, 1830, and was the son of Arthur and Ellen Whallen Cummins. He came to America in 1848 and located in Rahway, New Jersey. Five years later he moved to Louisville, Ky. and thence to Bullitt County where he operated a distillery for two years, then moved to Decatur, Illinois he also ran a distillery. In 1859, he returned to Kentucky and located at Raywick, where for nine years he was again engaged in the distillery and saw-mill business, In 1868, he located on the western part of Marion County on a farm and built a distillery, near New Hope and called it "Coon Hollow" Distillery. This plant he afterwards sold and built another near his residence which he operated under the name of "Coon Hollow" Distillery from which the station took its name. In 1881, he sold to the Nelson County Distillery Co., and purchased a distillery at Loretto, this county, which he operated under the name of R. Cummins up to the time of his death.
"Besides his wife (who was Emily Jane Brady, daughter of John and Mary (Simpson) Brady whom he married on October 1, 1861), six grown children survive him. The children are Mrs. J. Bernard Kearns and J. P. Cummins of Louisville, Mrs. W. J. O' Daniel of Lebanon and Miss Maggie and Elizabeth Cummins and Richard Cummins of Loretto.
"Mr. Cummins was one of the most charitable men of the county, always giving cheerfully and liberally to those in need, and a citizen of high character and Christian wirth. He was incapable of doing a little thing and placed a high estimate upon virtue. While he was almost helpless invalid for the last seventeen years of his life and suffered greatly, his mind was always clear and he looked after his business and signed all important papers himself."

WILL: Loretto, Ky. In the name of God, Amen. I Richard Cummins, being of sound mind and knowing the uncertainty of life do make and ordain this last will and testament dispensing of my property. After all my just debts are paid, I will all the rest of my property real and personal to my beloved wife Emily J. Cummins to be held and enjoyed by her as her own during her single life or widowhood in the event. In the event my wife married again, I will that she take one third of the personal estate and realty - and one third of the real estate for life. The other two thirds I will to my children to be divided among them equally. I have the utmost confidence in my wife and I make her the executrix of my will and ask that no bond be required of her. OBIT: Published in the Lebanon KY newspaper, with notes by R. Goodin. "The passing of Mrs. Emily J. Cummins. After a long and useful life, Mrs. Emily J. Cummins on the 29th of October 1922, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Gardiner, Lebanon Ky., passed to her eternal reward." [RG-This house was at the corner of Spalding Ave. and East Walnut Street.]
"Emily J. Brady was born May 8, 1838 in Washington Co., Ky. She was the daughter of Mary Simpson and John Brady, who were of the Colony that came over with Lord Baltimore and settled in Maryland. In 1805 they emigrated from Maryland to Washington Co., Ky. when Emily was born. [RG-This is incorrect, as Emily was not born until May 8, 1838. John Brady, her father, was born August 6, 1810. Evidently it was her grandfather who emigrated.] In 1861 she was married in St. Francis Church, Raywick, Ky. to Richard Cummins from County Carlow, Ireland. Mr. Cummins was a distiller in Ireland and after coming to this country, followed the same business for many years until his death July 4, 1903 at Loretto, Ky."
"From their beautiful and hospitable home, their open-handed generosity went out for the blessing of many, especially the struggling and anxious Pastors for the building of their church. [RG-They had at least four houses, one at New Hope and later at Coon Hollow; one of the first houses in this section to have indoor plumbing." They also lived in the house next to the Catholic Church at Raywick and at Loretto, Ky., the house next to the Lyons store.]
"Mrs. Cummins was, indeed, a valiant woman of keen intellect and zealous for the obligations of duty and right living. She was the happy mother of ten children, five of whom are still living. Mrs. T. Mattingly of Louisville, Mrs. W.J. O'Daniel and Mrs. E. Gardiner both of Lebanon, Mr. Richard Cummins of Jeffersonville and Mr. P.J. Cummins of Louisville. Besides all these she received into her home eight others, orphans and half orphans and reared them as her own."
"In this home of young and active life, she was queen and wielded her authority with great firmness and with a mother's love. One of the principle characteristics of Mrs. Cummins was her high regard for character and in this she valued alike the rich and the poor and in her manner to each, made no distinction."
"She was a woman of great and devoted faith. During her life she had masses said for the repose of her deceased husband, greatly in excess of the stipends she left for her own soul."
"The Solemn Requiem Mass was sung at St. Augustine's Church, Rev. Joseph Hogarty, celebrant, Rev. Father Werner, deacon, and Rev. Father Kloefner, subdeacon. After mass, the remains were taken to New Hope to be buried by the side of her husband. May she rest in peace!"
Another obituary published in a different newspaper:
"Mrs. Emily Jane Cummins died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Gardiner on Spalding avenus Sunday morning, Oct. 29, 1922, at about nine o'clock. She suffered from rheumatism for about two years before her death and the most of that time was confined to her room. This infirmity together with her age was responsible for her death.
"Mrs. Cummins was born in Washington County, Ky., May 1936 [RG-this is incorrect, the Bible states 1898] and was the daughter of John Brady and Mary Simpson Brady, who emigrated from St. Charles County, Maryland to Kentucky in 1805 [RG-believe this is incorrect as John Brady her father was born August 16, 1810. Evidently it was her grandfather who emigrated from Maryland.]. She was married to Richard Cummins who was a prominent distiller in this county from 1856 until his death on July 4, 1903. They resided in the west end of the [Marion] county, near Coon Hollow. After her husband's death, Mrs. Cummins lived at Loretto for nine years and then came to Lebanon and has since made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Gardiner.
"She was the mother of ten children, four of whom died in infancy. A daughter, Mrs. Winnie Kearns, died in Louisville in April 1916. The children living are Mrs. Maggie Mattingly and J.P. Cummins, Louisville, Richard Cummins, Jeffersonville, Ind., Mrs. Mary E. O'Daniel and Mrs. Elizabeth Gardiner of Lebanon. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Daniel Calan of North Dakota and Mrs. Rose DeWitt of Loretto; also a brother, Frank Brady of Raywick section. She had living twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
"Mrs. Cummins was a consistent member of the Roman Catholic faith and during the whole of her long life was noted for fidelity to the precepts of that Church. Like her husband, she dispensed Charity lavishly and was ever ready to respond to a worthy cause. She was of bright and cheerful disposition and during all the time of her illness she retained that spirit and bore her suffering heroically. During the time when the family was all together, the Cummins home was known far and wide for the hospitality dispensed there.
"The funeral services were held at St. Augustine Church in this city Tuesday morning with Solemn Requiem Mass with Rev. J.A. Hogarty as celebrant, Rev. N. Werner, deacon, and Rev. Wm. Kloepfer, sub-deacon. The sermon was delivered by Father Hogarty. After services the remains were taken to New Hope for interment in the family lot in St. Vincent's Cemetery."

NOTES: According to census information, his wife was also born in Ireland. Patrick cannot be definitely identified in the 1870 or 1880, and cannot be found in the 1900 census. It appears that Martin and Arthur are living in an orphan's home together in 1870. In 1880 his son Martin and daughter Ellen were living with his brother Richard.
Notes from RG- "Patrick Cummins was born in Ireland in 1835 and died Oct. 8, 1909 I assume at Loretto or Lebanon, Ky., as an old note in a scrap book states he was “born 1835, entered our home April 7th 1908 and died 10/8/09. OBIT: Published in a local newspaper at the time of her death.
"Local Woman Fatally Hurt Crossing Street. Mrs. Will O'Daniel Struck by Machine Driven by Walter Hardesty. Dies Two Hours Later."
"Mrs. Mary Ellen O'Daniel, wife of W.J. O'Daniel, was struck by an auto in front of her home in West Mulberry street Monday evening at 7:30 o'clock and so badly injured that she died two hours later at Baldrich's Infirmary where she was taken following the accident. Examination at the hospital disclosed that she had suffered a probable fracture of the skull, that one of her legs was broken and that she was bruised about the body. It is also thought she suffered internal injuries. She was unconscious when picked up and passed away without regaining consciousness.
"The machine that struck Mrs. O'Daniel was being driven by Walter Hardesty, attorney. He was going west on Mulberry street and was nearing his home, which is on the south side of the street almost directly across from the home of Mrs. O'Daniel. when the accident occurred. Mr. Hardesty, it is understood, had drawn to the north side of the thoroughfare in order to make the turn into the driveway at his home and while near the curb Mrs. O'Daniel is said to have stepped off the pavement into the path of the machine. She was on her way to the home of Judge and Mrs. John M. Cooper, and to attend a card party at St. Augustine School. It was raining at the time and it is believed that her umbrella, probably drawn close to her head, prevented her from seeing the approaching car. Mr. Hardesty, who was aline in the auto, said he saw Mrs. O'Daniel only a moment before he struck her, and not in time to stop.
"Persons who ran to the scene picked the injured woman up and placing her in Mr. Hardesty's car, hurried her to the hospital. Mr. Hardesty was too unnerved to drive the machine and someone in the crowd volunteered this service.
"News of the distressing accident spread rapidly and caused sorrow throughout the community. Widespread sympathy was expressed not only for the family and relations of the unfortunate victim, but for the driver of the car who, since the accident, has been under the care of a physician part of the time.
"Mrs. O'Daniel, one of the city's well-known women and a devout member of the Catholic Church, was 65 years old. She was a daughter of the late Richard and Emily Brady Cummins and was born in this county July 30, 1865. She was married twice. Her first husband was T.T. Abell, who died thirty-four years ago. She is survived by her second husband, to whom she was married twenty-nine years ago, and by one daughter, Mrs. J. Lee Goodin, born of her first marriage. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Mattingly and Elizabeth Gardiner, and by one brother J. Pat Cummins, all of Louisville.
"Funeral services, conducted by Rev. J.A. Hogarty, were held yesterday morning at St. Augustine's Church. Burial in St. Augustine's Cemetery.
"The pallbearers were F.E. Hardesty, S.A. Noe, Frank L. Dant, Robert L. Spalding, John W. Clarkson and William Hamilton."

Historic Nelson County, Its Homes and People, by Sarah B. Smith, Copyright 1982, Page 246: MAPLE GROVE FARM - This home is located about a mile from New Hope and at one time consisted of between 1,000 and 1,500 acres. It was the residence of Harry MILES, son of Philip MILES and his wife Eleanor, who came to New Hope in 1787. Harry MILES, married a second time to Nancy McAtee and they lived in the home which he built "over 150 years ago". They had two sons, Thomas H. MILES, and Edward Leo MILES, who married Anna Bradford, a niece of Jefferson Davis. Mrs. E.L. Miles died October, 1904 and Edward Leo died August 1905. The original house is now the tenants house. Mr. MILES claimed he had planted one of every tree native to KY, including one given by Jefferson Davis. After the death of E.L. MILES, according to his will, the estate went to two sisters of Mrs. MILES - Mrs. Elizabeth Bradford White and Mrs. Lucy Bradford Mitchell. The property was then sold to Arthur J. Cummins.
