Joe and Billie met while she was living in Sumter working for her uncle at Evans Trailers. Joe was working , at the time, in Columbia, SC for Singer Sewing Machine. They were both taking their meals at Mrs. Coker's boarding house. This lady was always watching out for young people and very kind to them. When Joe saw Billie he said to a friend, " there's my chicken". ( Joe had a real way with words)His friend said, " Hands off. See thst car she's driving". They dated for three years.

Joe and Billie were married in the home of Billie's uncle John at 12:00 noon on April 22, 1939. Her cousin, John's daughter Helen, had been married in the same home a few months previous, so Billie decided too stand in a different part of the house for the ceremony. After leaving the wedding, they stopped in St. George for lunch. When they got out of the car they had to shake the rice from their clothes with everyone on the street watching and laughing in pleasure.

Their next stop was in Hardeeville, SC to see Helen and Carl Mittell. This was around 3 or 4 pm. They continued on to Jacksonville,Fl. where they spent their wedding night at the George Washington Hotel. The next day they played in St. Augustine and Marineland. Unfortunately, there were no photographs taken at the wedding, but while at Marineland, they had their silhouettes made. These have been treasured as thier wedding pictures ever since. From there they continued to Daytona Beach, Fl, where they spent 2 nights and, no doubt, drove their car on the World's Most Famous Beach. This trip was Billie's first time to travel to Florida.
