On 18 January 1819 in Lincoln Co, NC, an indenture was made that did put, place and bind (adopt) unto Lewiss Hofer the orphan child of Henry Pope whose name was Peter Pope, age 15 years 6 months old. On the next day,19 January 1819 in Lincoln Co Nc, an indenture was made that did put, place and bind (adopt) unto John Pope, William Pope,9 years and 8 months old and George Pope, 13 years old was bound to George Setzer. I am assuming that William Pope and George Pope, both were orphan children on Henry Pope, I believe that Henry was a brother to John Pope. The folowing is found in the book, " The Arts and Crafts in North Carolina, 1699-1840," by james H Craig on p. 92

Notes for AMON POPE:
In the 1840 Census Amon Pope is listed as head of household in Lincoln Co NC,Upper Regiment Militia. His age range was given as 20 to 30 years old. Others in the household were 2 males (under 5), 1 female (20-30), and 1 female (under5).
In the 1850 Catawba Co NC Census, he s listed as head of household #248/248,a farmer,and 37 years old. Others listed were; Eliza(36),Marcus(15),Remeus(13),Anna(11),Seda(9),Camilla(7), and Pinkney(1). There was an Elizabeth Hedrick,age 57,living alone in the adjoining household. She may be the mother of Eliza Hedrick Pope.
Amon was not found in the 1860 census. In the 1870 Census, he was head of household #154/149,Cline's Twp in Catawba Co,NC,a laborer,56 years old,and had $150 in personal property. Those also listed were Eliza(54),camilla(21), Alice(18),Jonas(17), and Logan(15). In the 1880 SC Census records for Township #12,Fairfield County, Amon is found as head of household 203,age 65,a farmer and born in NC with his wife,Eliza age 68 born in NC and one daughter,Camilla, age 30 born in NC.
Amon Pope appears in th eminutes of the Catawba County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions in the July 1851 Session where it is recorded that he was assigned to help maintain the road from Shuford's Ferry to Newton beginning at the forks at Connor's. In the October 1852 Session, he was alloted to help Silas Wike maintain the Newton road from Red Hill to Henry Mangus'(Mangus may be Minges) gate. Per C. David Pope,Jr of Statesville, NC, in the abstractof the July 1854 term there is an entry regarding the State vs Simon Pope. This could be a mistake for Amon as David has never seen Simon Pope in any records. In the case the defendant submitted and there was no judgement prayed by the defendant.
It was ordered that all costs( $5) be paid into the office. The defendant gave Mary Yount as security.

According to th e"History of Catawba County," page 333, Mark Pope was enlisted 12Aug1861 by Captain E C McLure at camp near Manassas VA in the 1st Company F of the 6th Regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers during the War Between the States. Military records list him as Marcus Pope,Mark G Pope or Mark L Pope and show he died of fever. According to Surgeon's Certificate and Deaths or Report of Sick and Wounded, he died of disease congestion in brain.
