Colember-Culumber
Searches
in Calvert County, Maryland for Cullembers.
The Calvert County Courthouse was burned three times and almost nothing
of real interest to us survived. I have extracted every Cullember
record which I found in all surviving material. If you locate any
other intformation, please let me know. I have put down every source
that I have searched so you will know when you find an additional
source. This looks like more than it actually is because there is
a lot of duplication.
Charles Frances Stein, A History of
Calvert County, Maryland, pages 46-47:
The county had large tobacco plantations, 10,000 plants per
acre. This required large amounts of labor which was mostly provided by
negro slaves. These were imported very early on. It took one year from
planting to sale of the tobacco. The colony discouraged
manufacturing.
