5. Martha Morrison CULBERT was born on 18 Nov 1841, the fifth child of Moses and Jane Fleming CULBERT. 1

William H. EVES was born on 1 Oct 1825. 2

GREENWilliam H. EVES was chosen as chairman of this committee. 32  Later in 1863, William was promoted to Second Lieutenant. 33  William was recognized for gallantry during assaults made in Virginia during the summer of 1864, and was recommended for promotion by Major General BUTLER. 40

On 29 May 1866 the partnership of H.P. EVES and W. EVES, Sr., dealing in coal, fertilizer, etc. at the Media Railroad Station, was dissolved.  William EVES, Jr. took over operation of the business. 39

Martha and William were married 13 Jan 1869 by the Rev. James W. DALE in Media, Pennsylvania. 3 14

In 1869, William was in business selling grain, flour, and feed on the corner of Edgmont Avenue and 12th Street in Chester. 58

Martha and William are listed in the 1870 census for Chester.  William was a retail dealer with a personal estate value of $200. He was born in Pennsylvania of U.S-born parents.  Martha is listed as owning real estate valued at $7,000.  Also living with the family at this time are two store attendants, James CULBERT, age 24, probably the younger brother of Martha, and James THOMPSON, age 13.  James THOMPSON is shown as being born in Delaware of U.S,-born parents. 4

Their children were:

From 1872 to 1889, William was a grocer at 1147 Edgmont, Chester, where he also resided. 59 60 61 62 64

In the 1880 census for the North Ward, Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, William is listed as a grocer, his wife is keeping house, and daughter, Bessie, is at home.  Also in the household are Mary DAVIS, age 69, a servant, James CULBERT, Martha's younger brother, age 33, and James THOMPSON, age 22, a store clerk, likely working for William EVES. 68

In 1882, William was a member of the General Committee planning Chester's celebration of the bicentennial of the founding of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, marked by the landing of William PENN in October 1682. 42

Before his death, William was attended by William B. ULRICH,, M.D. 14  He died 7 Oct 1890, in Chester, and was buried 10 Oct in the Middletown Presbyterian Church cemetery with military honors by Horace W. FAIRLAMB, undertaker. 7 14

Commencing on 24 Oct 1890, Martha received an $8 per month pension from the U.S. government for William's Civil War service.  Martha's declaration for a widow's pension was witnessed by James C. CULBERT [likely her brother] in Chester. 14

From 1891-1893 Martha handled the grocery store at 1147 Edgmont, Chester. 63 65

Martha died on 10 Aug 1894.  She was buried in the Middletown Presbyterian Church cemetery. 7

Following Martha's death, her daughter Bessie lived in the house at 1147 Edgmont, Chester. 66

On an unknown date in a business directory it showed the William EVES residence on Edgmont Street, Chester accepting orders for sewing machine repair and adjustments on behalf of J.P. CROOK and T. HIGGINS. 12
