2. Thomas Fleming CULBERT was born on 13 June 1835 in Nether Providence Twp., Delaware County, Pennsylvania, the second child of Moses and Jane FLEMING CULBERT. 1
Martha C. CLEGG was born in Pennsylvania about 1834, 2 4 the daughter of Mark 8 and Louisa CLEGG 17 of Nether Providence Twp., Del. Co. 8 Louisa died in Philadelphia, the Saturday before 18 Apr 1864, aged 54. 18
Thomas was married to Martha on 24 May 1855 in the evening
by the Reverend GAYLE. At this time Thomas was living in Chester Twp., Delaware Co., PA.
8
In the 1860 census for Chester Twp., Delaware County, PA we first find the family, with Thomas listed as a master carpenter, with a personal estate value of $200. It also shows that Martha was born in PA, and was two years older than Thomas. In the same household was Isaac WEAVER, age 26, an edge tool maker born in PA. Along with them were listed the first three daughters shown below: 2
The family is also found in the 1870 census for Village Green, Chester Township. Living with Thomas, Martha, Mary and Emma at this time was Albert CLEGG, carpenter's apprentice, age 18, who probably was Martha's brother. This census also shows that the father of Martha and Albert was foreign born, and that Thomas' personal estate value remained at $200. 4
On an 1875 map of Chester Township is shown a 2-3/4 acre property owned by Thomas. 5 It is located in what is now known as Brookhaven Boro, on the southwest corner of the junction of Edgmont and
Brookhaven Roads. The map shows that a church building and cemetery were located on the property, which no longer exist there today. On an earlier 1870 map of the same property, it does not indicate it is owned by Thomas. 6
From 1879-1880 Martha was living at 1232 Providence Avenue, Chester. 20 21
In the 1880 census, Thomas is found in a hotel in San Francisco, California. His occupation is listed as carpenter. 23 His family remained in the North Ward, Chester, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. Along with Martha and her daughters, Mary and Mattie, were Martha's brother, Albert CLEGG, age 28, running a cigar store, her brother-in-law, Harry CUTBERT(sic), age 26, a clerk in a flour store, and George DAVIS, age 26, a plumber and gas fitter, who was probably boarding with them. 24

In 1855 Mark CLEGG advertised to sell his 65 acre Clifton
Grove farm in Nether Providence Twp. on the east bank of Ridley Creek, plus a 60
by 152 foot building lot on the road from Providence to Middletown, where he
resided. 19
In 1857 Mark CLEGG still owned land in Nether Providence
Twp. 12
In January 1862 Mark CLEGG was still trying to sell his
farm. He was living at 624 Market St., Philadelphia. His farm in Nether
Providence Twp. was occupied by a tenant. 13 In April 1862 it was advertised to be sold at
a public sale. 14 It was advertised again to be sold at a public sale in May, 1862. 15 This time, John EVES, of Chester Twp., reportedly purchased the property for $6,400. 16 However, the property was seized and advertised in a Sheriff's sale by N.L. YARNALL, Sheriff, in June, 1862. 17
On the Saturday before 8 Apr 1864, Louisa CLEGG died in Philadelphia, age 54. 22
