Thomas M. CULBERT was born in 1833 10, the second child of James and Martha MORRISON CULBERT. Thomas married Mary Ellen (Ellie) SPRINGER c. 1859, 8 and they lived in Wilmington, Delaware. Ellie was born 20 Jun 1836, 33 the daughter of Peter SPRINGER. 33 Peter was a well known hatter and
furrier in Wilmington. 33
The 1860 census for Wilmington, Delaware taken 27 June shows this household as follows: 8 [Note: that Thomas was in the same
profession as his father-in-law, and perhaps they were in business together.]
The 1870 census for Wilmington, Delaware taken 27 July shows this household as follows: 9
In 1883, Thomas was listed in the Wilmington City Directory as living at 309 West Seventh, and worked as a distributing clerk at the Post Office. 37
Ellie CULBERT died of apoplexy (stroke) 14 on 5 Dec 1887 14 17 at the age of 49. 14 [Note: Ellie's age at death does not agree with her birth and death dates.] At the time of her death she lived at 319 W. 7th Street, Wilmington. 14 She was buried in Sec. 23, Lot 43 in the Wilmington & Brandywine cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware. 17 The family monument, photographed in 1998, can be seen here: Monument Thomas later married Martha BOYD.
Thomas died 29 Sep 1903 10 15 at age 70, and is buried in Sec. 23, Lot 43 in the Wilmington & Brandywine cemetery in Wilmington, Delaware. 18 The family monument, photographed in 1998, can be seen here: Monument At the time of his death he lived at 1013 Tatnall in Wilmington, Delaware. 15 The cause of death was inflammation of the liver. 15 Thomas' will was dated 28 Sep 1903, the day before he died. 23 In his will he gave all his property to his wife, Martha, in a life estate, and upon her death to "Robert
CULBERT, John CULBERT (of Philadelphia), James CULBERT (of Chester), Harry MURDICK (of Wilmington), and Mary Ellen Culbert
MULDOON, of Baltimore" in equal shares. 23 [Note: Robert Fleming CULBERT, John Snowden CULBERT and James Fleming CULBERT were the sons of Moses CULBERT, and Harry MURDICK was the husband of Thomas' housekeeper, Mary. I do not know the family relationship of Mary Ellen CULBERT MULDOON. At some point before 1917 this Mary Ellen married and became Ellie Culbert LINTHICUM, and lived at Linthicum Heights, Maryland 31] Thomas' will also states that his wife is to care for his housekeeper, Mary MURDICK, for life, or else forfeit her right to the property. 23 Robert G. HARMAN, attorney, of Wilmington, Delaware, was named Executor. 23 Baldwin SPRINGER and William H. CONNOR were witnesses. 23 [Note: SPRINGER was the maiden name of Ellie Culbert LINTHICUM's mother, as well as the maiden name of Thomas' first wife, so there is likely to be a family relationship between the SPRINGERs and CULBERTs, and thus also to Baldwin SPRINGER.]
The Inventory and Appraisement of the Goods and Chattels
from Thomas M. CULBERT's estate included a gold watch valued at $100 and about $350 in cash on deposit in the National Bank of Delaware in Wilmington. During the first settlement dated 28 Mar 1905, rent was credited from J. Milton MADDOX and rent from 502 Shipley St., Wilmington, Delaware, which had been Samuel CULBERT's real estate office. For the second and final settlement, dated 1 Jul 1905, unspecified real estate was sold to pay the debts of the estate. In addition, about $440 was received from settlement of claims from Samuel CULBERT's estate. The balance of value and payments of the estate was $7.294.25. 23
Martha CULBERT, widow, later moved from Wilmington to Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania. 31 I believe she had Culbert relatives there [descendants of John Snowden CULBERT]. She died in 24 Jan 1934. 31 It is not known where she was buried.
