Samuel was in the real estate business in Wilmington,
Delaware, and had been in this business since about 1879. 25 His real estate office was located at
502 Shipley Street. 26
The 1880 census for Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware shows Martha CULBERT, age 70(sic), keeping house, her son, Samuel CULBERT, age 40(sic), a real estate agent, and Sarah JONES, age 22, a servant. 9
Samuel died on 3 Feb 1903 10 21 22 at age 64 22 of uraemia (kidney disease) 22, and he is buried in Section 23, Lot 43, in the Wilmington & Brandywine Cemetery, Wilmington, Delaware. 21 The family monument, photographed in 1998, can be seen here: Monument At the time of his death he was single, 22 and living at 503 Market Street, Wilmington, Delaware. 22
Samuel's will was made on 23 Nov 1885. 5 He willed the residue of his estate to his "beloved friend Hester A. WISDOM, wife of R.H.B. WISDOM now of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania." Furthermore, at the time of Hester's death, Samuel
directed that his real estate be given to "her son, Samuel Culbert
WISDOM." See WISDOM Family His named Executor was his "esteemed friend" James H. HOFFECKER, Jr. Witnesses were Charles G. GUYER and Frances H. HOFFECKER. Bond was taken in a penalty of $5,000, with the Wilmington Trust Company providing surety. 26
The Inventory and Appraisement of Goods and Chattels of
Samuel CULBERT's estate provides some interesting information. The possessions and furnishings in his office at 502 Shipley St., Wilmington,
Delaware were valued at $46.75. His possessions and furnishings in his
home at 503 Market St., Wilmington, were valued at $422.50, and many items were noted as Samuel having only a half-interest in them. Two of the most valuable items were a diamond ring and a diamond stud, each worth $150.00. The house had three floors and a garrett, with kitchen and dining room on the first floor, a parlor, two bedrooms and bathroom on the second, and one bedroom on the third. 26
The first account of settlement by the administrator of
Samuel's estate, the Wilmington Trust Co., was dated 15 Feb 1906. It
included cash received from J. Milton MADDOX, proceeds from the sale of
unspecified real estate ordered by the Orphan's Court made in May and September 1905, with total received amounting to $12,990.95. In addition, there was a first and final accounting by the executor dated 11 Feb 1905. Here, it shows rents totalling $3,136.00 from Feb 1903 to Dec 1904 received from the estate of James CULBERT, split half and half between the estates of Samuel CULBERT and Thomas CULBERT. Rent was also received from a house at the corner of 14th
and Orange, as well as from the estate of M. and S. CULBERT [Note: who these
CULBERTs are is unknown] from a property at the NE corner of Front & King St. And, rent was received from the following properties owned by Samuel, all in Wilmington: 26
All of this income received from properties, interest, mortgages, etc. was valued at $8,812.10. After all the estate debts were paid, $1,356.87 was the remaining value of his estate. 26
