James W. CULBERT was born 9 Mar 1830, the first child of James and Martha MORRISON CULBERT. Little is known about James other than he worked as a grocer's clerk with his father while living at home during the 1850s. 5 6
James married Sarah Derickson HARVEY (b. 1836 12 ), the only child of Amor H. HARVEY (1806-1887) and Martha DERICKSON (1811-1884) 12. James and Sarah lived in Brandywine Village 11 in Wilmington, Delaware.
There is no federal census record for the James W.
CULBERT household, because in 1860 he still lived with his parents 6, and was apparently not yet married. It is not known if James and Sarah had any children, but this is doubtful because of James' early death. He died 26 Apr 1866, at the age of 36, and is buried in the DERICKSON family plot, Lot No. 627, Holy Trinity (Old Swedes) Church cemetery, Wilmington, Delaware. 12 The family monument, photographed in 1998, can be seen here: Monument
James' will was dated 8 Mar 1866. 11 At the time he was still living in Brandy Wine Village. 11 James left all of his possessions to his wife, Sarah. 11 He appointed as Executor his "beloved uncle" James C. AIKIN. 11 [Note: this is probably the same James AIKINS who provided information to the cemetery upon James' father, James', death.] Witnesses to the will were H.W. BARTRAM and Jacob DERICKSON [probably related by marriage]. An inventory and appraisement and list of debts and credits were to be filed at the Register's Office on or before 5 Nov 1866, and an account rendered on or before 5 May 1867. These documents are available with the will at the Delaware Public Archives. Bond in the amount of penalty of $10,000, with Amor H. HARVEY [father-in-law] providing surety. 11 The inventory of his estate included: a horse, carriage, harness set, 1/2 interest in a sleigh, a gun, saddle, and
bridle, the total being valued at $332.50. 11
After James died, Sarah married David Penny DERICKSON (b.c. 1820). 12 David died 15 Sep 1903. 12 Sarah died 4 Jun 1913. 12 They are both buried in the DERICKSON family plot in the Holy Trinty Church cemetery, Wilmington, Delaware, along with Sarah's parents, two uncles, and two aunts. 12
