Lebanon Schools
The Old Academy
The first school in Lebanon was 'The Old Academy'.
It was built in 1855 (Laclede County History pub. 1979 by Lois Roper
Beard, page 15). This was a two story wood building. Among men
responsible for the erection of this school were John B. Harrison,
Colonel Alfred Cherry, James Appling and B. B. Harrison.
This school was located in Old Town Lebanon. About 1913, Baxter
Lambeth (who had purchased the property where it stood) had the
building removed since it had been unsafe for sometime. Harold Bell
Wright's book "The Calling of Dan Matthews" writes of this building.

Lebanon's First Brick
School Building
Lebanon's first brick school
building with a tower was built in 1871. Nine grades were taught here in
the 1890s. Sometime around 1900, the basement was finished and made
ready for class rooms. The first grade was moved up to the second floor.
A three year high school was established in the basement. In the school
year of 1908 -1909 it was made into a four year high school. (Laclede
County History pub. 1979 by Lois Roper Beard, pages 15, 36, and 37)
After 1912, this school became the grammar school. According to
the 1912 plat map, this school was on Fifth Street between Washington
Ave and Adams Ave. This building no longer stands.

New Lebanon High School
A new
Lebanon High School was built in 1912. (Laclede County History pub. 1926
by Leo Nyberg, page 67) This building was built next door to the first
brick school building on Fifth Street. The 1931 Magnet (year book)
shows that 7th thru 12th grades were attending at that time. (The
Lebanon Library has several years of this year books on their shelves.)
