About the Auglaize TownshipThe Auglaize Township is located in 35N - 36N Range 15 - 16 West. The main communities are as follows:
The 1889 Laclede History reflects the following: Auglaize Township. -- Beginning at or near the northeast corner or Section 3, Township 35, Range 15; thence northwesterly and west with the county line to the northwest corner of Section 3, Township 36, Range 16; thence due south with the section line to the southwest corner of Section 34, Township 35, Range 16; thence east with the township line to the southeast corner of Section 34, Township 35, Range 15; thence north to the place of beginning. Sleeper is a station on the same railroad, seven miles north-east of Lebanon, contains two general stores, kept by Tim O'Connell and George W. Campbell -- the latter being the Wheelers' store -- and a blacksmith shop. Early SettlersThe 1889 Laclede History reflects the following: About the year 1840 David, Levi C., Daniel, John and Martin Fulbright settled on the Dry Auglaize, on the broad and productive acres now held and cultivated by their descendants, worthy sons of their worthy sires. Levi C. Fulbright, who still was the first man to whom the ordinance of Christian baptism was administered in the county, and he assisted in locating the first public highway established in the county. Other early settlers to the area were as follows: Township 35, Range 15: John R. Cooper, in 1842; John Lauderman, George T. Holman, Andrew and Josiah Lambeth, in 1844; James and John Jones, in 1848; Byron Moore, James E. Clark, Isacc Wilson, John Williamson and John R. Craddock, in 1850. Township 35, Range 16: James and John Atchley, in 1844; John Smith, in 1852; Joseph Thomas, in 1856. |
