About the Union TownshipThe Union Township is located in 32N - 33N Range 16 - 17 West in Laclede County. This township is on the borders the Spring Hollow, Phillipsburg, Lebanon, and Washington Townships of Laclede County and the Counties of Dallas and Webster. Phillipsburg was originally part of the Union Township. The main communities are as follows:

The 1889 Laclede History reflects the following:Conway This town is on the same railroad, sixteen miles southwest of Lebanon; it was laid out in the 1869 by the railroad company, and Hanson's Addition thereto was laid out in 1882. The first store in the place was opened in 1869 by Irvin & Knight. C. Hanson opened his store in 1871, and still continues his business. He has the leading trade of the town - general merchandising - has a large two-story brick block, with tow store-rooms on the first floor, and keeps both stories filled with goods. The present business of the town consists of the following: General merchandise - C. Hanson, R. C. Edmisson, F. C. Townsend. Drugs - John Ragland. Tinner and jewelers - Bradshaw and Dudley. Barber - James Stone. Livery - W. H. Yandle, Burnes & Rose. Blacksmiths - W. O Douglas, John Collins, S. N. Beck, Wagonmaker - R. C. Newport. Shoemaker - Thomas Green. Artist - A. Davis. Roller flouring mills - James Legan & Co. Saddles and harness - A. S. Taggard. Hotel - M. Pare. Brick yard - Calvin Newport. Postmaster - H. L. Brown. Physicians - T. J. North, J. N. Anderson, T. F. Lockwood. Societies. -- Conway Lodge No. 528, A. F. & A. M., was organized in 1884. Present officers: Thomas Anderson, W. M.; A. S. Luallen, S. W.; J. M. Terry, J. W. Membership, forty; hall in Hanson's Block. Conway Lodge No. 364, A. O. U. W., organized in 1886. Present officers: C. Hanson, M. W.; O. M. Gunderson, Rec. Membership about eighteen. W. C. T. U., organized in 1887, Mrs. C. Hanson, president. A number of ex-Union soldiers have organized a post of the G. A. R., and applied for a charter. |
