About the Mayfield Township

The Mayfield Township is located in 35N - 36N Range 14 West.  The main communities are as follows:

  • Richland, Township 36N, Range 14W, Section 13.  The largest portion of this town is located in Pulaski County.  A portion is also in Camden County.
  • Stoutland, Township 36N, Range 14W, Section 31.  On the Camden County line.

Early Settlers

The 1889 Laclede History reflects the earliest settlers of the Mayfield Township 36, Range 14 as  George W. Davis and James Hendrick, in 1844; John Quinn, in 1848.

The 1889 Laclede History reflects the earliest settlers of the Mayfield & Smith Townships in Township 35, Range 14:  Adam Todd, Lewis McCain and William Murrell, in 1840; Jeremiah Rowland and John Mosher, in 1842; William Sanders and William P. Rippy, in 1843; John Fugate, in 1844; Benjamin F. Fugate and William H. Smith, in 1846, M. B. Woody, in 1849.

In 1845 through 1849 the first settlers to purchase land from the US Government in the Mayfield Township were:

  • Adam Todd, 91.35 acres in section 4, Township 35N, Range 14W
  • Isaac N. Davis, 40 acres in section 2, Township 35N, Range 14W
  • George W. Davis, 80 acres in section 33 & 34, Township 36N, Range 14W
  • Robert Davis, 40 acres in section 34, Township 36N, Range 14W
  • James Hendrick, 80 acres in section 33, Township 36N, Range 14W
  • John Quinn, 40 acres in section 35, Township 36N, Range 14W

This photo of a group of Stoutland area men was taken on Feb. 23, 1937, on a banking trip to St. Louis Land Bank to be consulted about financial conditions of the Stoutland vicinity.  Shown are G. H. Miller, Lloyd Calkin, Hugh McClure, and Floyd Miller.
