Willie Mae Herndon is the daughter of Jesse Moorman Herndon, Sr. (born
June 14, 1853 in Meade Co., KY - died February 27, 1893 in Shreveport,
and buried in Panola Co., TX.) and of Alice Hardie (December 18,
1855 - July 24, 1884). Jesse's parents, William "Buck" Herndon and
Mary Elizabeth Woolfolk, Virginians, settled in Texas and then bought a
plantation south of Shreveport, Keachi Road area. William and Mary Elizabeth
are buried at Centuries Memorial Cemetery -- moved there from the plantation
graveyard about 1950. Jesse's older brother (so Willa's uncle) Edward
Beverly Herndon married Mary Francis Wise, daughter of Jacob S. Wise and
Louisa J. George of Greenwood LA. Jacob and Louisa built was is thought
to be the oldest surviving structure in Caddo Parish, built in 1840, now
called the "Flournoy-Wise House". Edward was Mayor of Shreveport
in 1891. Willie Mae's brother David Allen Herndon's descendants are still
in the Shreveport area.
