This is Grimness School as it looked in 1971. There is a reinforced cement air-raid shelter that was built during the second world war just back of the car in the picture. Keep in mind that the German bombers would fly over South Ronaldsay to get to Scapa Flow, the British Naval base. When planes would be approaching a air raid siren would be heard so all the school children would run for the shelter. |
