Th Island of Burray, lying just North of South Ronaldsay was joined by the Church Hill Barrier # 4
The red marker is North Cara where Alexander Cromarty (1856) learned his Cooper trade.
Remember what the Churchhill Barrier looked like?

This causeway linked South Ronaldsay with Burray. It was built following the sinking of the
Royal Oak, many years after Catherine Cromarty and Samuel Ross lived in Burray.
This is one of four causeways linking South Ronaldsay with the mainland of Orkney.
The barriers were erected to block the Eastern approaches to Scapa Flow after a
German U-Boat had penetrated to sink the Royal Oak in 1939.
