South Cara as it looked in 1971.
When the family of William and Margaret Cromarty raised their family the only building in this picture would have been the slanted roofed stone house to the right of center. It would have been a two story building with a byre attached on the side facing the yard. 1846-1886.
The following is a quote from 'The Islands of Orkney', by Liv Kjorsvik Schei
"The farm of South Cara on the east side has belonged to the Cromarty family
since 1450. They also owned North Cara, but sold that property when they
established themselves at South Cara, building a new house there in 1633.
Though quite small, the two-storey house was known for having cut freestone
round the door and lower windows, a feature unique at the time."
In 1971, there was still a stone stairway leading to the second floor with a stone fireplace in the corner. The walls were about two feet thick. The house faced the North Sea and was about 500 yards from the shore.

Left Map showing buildings as they appeared in1882 with the larger building below and a little to the left of the letter S would be the original South Cara home at that point of time. Shortly after the 1882 Map was made the Upper House of South Cara was built just to the left of the original Home and on a higher piece of ground (hence the name Upper House). See right picture. The original home became known as the Lower House of South Cara, but only for a short time.
James Cromarty had a new home built directly above the letter S as shown in the right picture above, and it became know as the Lower House of South Cara. The old original home of South Cara was probably never used again after James moved out about 1894.

Lower House as it looked in 1904.
This is the new house into which James and his family moved.
After you have browsed around come back here to Homepage and sign the guestbook.
