Louis Augade,
nine-year-old musical prodigy, who set the parks poem to music. This bright
little fellow is an accomplished violinist, and a son of Professor and Mrs.
A. L. C. Augade, o f 802 8th Ave, West.
Superintendent Buchanan of the Parks Board had composed a short piece of
poetry and offered rewards of one dollar each to the children of Calgary who could commit the poetry to
memory. This little lad not only learned the verses, but set them to music. Composers always were an unappreciated lot. We like their
tunes but, especially the old masters, we let them starve. Superintendent
Buchanan wrote some charming verses about parks and larks and trees and J.
P.'s, and the like, and offered one dollar rewards to kiddies that could
stand it to commit the verses to memory. Up steps several. But one lad,
braver than the rest, and more of a genius, set them to a tune and went and lullabied the Superintendent to slumber. When the song
ceased the Superintendent woke up, patted the boy on the topknot, begged for
the manuscrpt, but lamented to say that the dollars
were all gone. So it is the brave lad who furnished the Superintendent a
moment of eccstacy, like genii of old got nothing
but praise.

Louis Augade
started his musical education early and graduated in violin from the Toronto
Conservatory of Music with first class honors at age 12.
In 1925 Mr. Augade switched to playing the string
bass and joined the Calgary philharmonic for 42 years,
becoming principal bass for several years until his retirement two years ago.
He also taught music at Mount Royal College.
Several anecdotes of Louis' life have been related by long-time orchestra
players.
One recalls that music marked even the entrance to the home in which he grew
up. On the arch over the gateway was tune from Faust.
Another recalled that a number of years ago Louis Augade
had received special permission to perform with a women's orchestra in the
Calgary Festival because no distaffers played the
bass. It was a point of honor with him that he stood to play his instrument. Calgary's musical life was greatly
enriched by Louis Augade.
He delighted in working with his hands and during the 1920s, he apprenticed
as a machinist. He eventually became foreman at Union Iron and Engineering.
