Foula
A modern day photo with modern day transportation.
A 45kw aerogenerator, integrated with hydro turbines, uses both wind and water power
to produce the island's electricity.
The five square miles of island consists of five large hills. In days past the people of
Foula were renowned for their skill in scaling the cliff faces, for in hard times they ate
both the birds and their eggs.
The Norse name, Fugoly, means "bird island" and thee are many thousands of sea-birds
on Foula
Foula Remained under Norse udal law till the late 17th century, on the death of Katherine
Asmunder, the last Queen of Foula, it came under the control of the Scottish lairds. The
old Norse language was commonly spoken until the end of the 18th century and the last
person to speak Norn was thought to be Jeannie Ratter (nee Manson) who died in 1926.
In the 1950s her daughter of the same name, still knew the words of a ferocious Norn "lullaby
which went something like "sleep my bairn, if you won't, I'll hit your head against the wall, and
then you'll sleep"!
When Jacob Jacobsen, the Faroese linguist, visited in 1894 he gathered the islanders at Hametoun,
for he found the folk lively, intelligent and of excellent memory.
Time moves slowly on the island and although the Gregorian calendar was introduced in 1752,
the Foula folk still celebrate Christmas as Auld Yule on January 6th, and the Old New Year a week
later, according to the Julian Calendar.
The Oceanic sister ship to the Titanic was wrecked off Foula in 1914. The propeller from off the
vessel is displayed outside the Shetland Museum in Lerwick.
In 1936, professional actors and local folk appeared in the now classic film - "The Edge of the World"
