Sandy, as he was known, was born in Seaview House and received his education in Scalloway Public School. After leaving school he was a short time with Harcus Linklater & Co. Merchants Scalloway. He joined the army, first in Seaforth Highlanders then Machine Gun Corp. During World War I he was badly gassed 25 Dec 1917. He received a Military Medal. Returning from the War he was a short time with Harcus again before starting a small herring business which made him well known to the travelling public throughout Shetland. After marrying he went to Lochend, where he conducted a Merchant's business until two years before he died.
