Alexander Cromarty and Jane Gray about 1884, Seaview House with Nelly on guard
Most of their married life they lived in the home to the right next door to the Royal Hotel.
Alexander served his apprenticeship time as a cooper with Dowl at North Cara, South Ronaldsay. He then left for Glassgow with the intentions of going to Canada if unable to get a job in Glassgow. While in Glassgow there was a man that told him he could get a job with Hay and Company up in Shetland. He went to Shetland and stayed with them until four years before he died. He worshiped the Company. It is interesting in the 1881 Census it shows Alexander and his first
cousin John who grew up next door in South Cara residing in 46 Castle Street, Fraserburgh, Aberdeen

When Alexander's brother, James, died in February1898 at South Cara, Alexander had the opportunity to take over the farm. They moved from Shetland and lived there for about 4 years until he decided that the farm was not for him. He offered the farm to his younger brother, Samuel who was living in Shetland at the time. Alexander and his family then returned to Scalloway, Shetland. Samuel came back to South Cara and took over the farm.
