Text: Many Craycroft's have made their homes in the State of Missouri. The first was Benjamin Craycroft (Senior). He and family lived in Cape Guardeau (sp) from 1837 to 1849.
Reference: 824
Note: Benjamin left home at the age of 16 and followed his brother Edward to Rockville.
When his father died in 1817, Benjamin was left out of the will, receiving only $5, but later the three other brothers gave him $500 and the Family record.
The 1850 Census of Macon County, Illinois, lists a Benjamin Craycroft, age 35, farmer, born in Maryland. Despite the age discrepancy all other details listed (wife and children) match perfectly. (Robert Lynn Craycroft)
I have a scan of a Land Patent, Certificate No. 14178, issued by the General Land Office, showing that Benjamin Craycroft of Macon County, Illinois, was granted a patent for 40 acres in Vandalia, Illinois. It is dated October 1, 1849.
According to the 1865 Taxpayers List for Macon County, Illinois, a Benjamin Craycroft paid taxes on property in Decatur and South Wheatland. In 1866 a Benjamin Craycroft paid taxes on property in South Wheatland. (Robert Lynn Craycroft)
