COMMENTS:
Also supporting this are photocopies of transportee records from the archives of the State of Tasmania, Australia. These were sent to me by Maria Bresnehan Rodgers. The following is abstracted from those records.
Bresnahan, Connor or Cornelius, tried in Limerick, Ireland, on 28 June 1850. Height: 5' 7 3/4", Age 45, Sentence 7 (years), Religion: Roman Catholic, Read or write: Y, Married or Single: M, Children: 3, Statement of Offence: Highway Robbery 3 Pounds, Trade: Laborer, Native Place: County Limerick, Remarks: W(ife); Bridget, B(rothers); John, Edward - America.
In additional records from the same source, Cornelius is described as: complexion light, head round, whiskers light brown, visage oval, forehead high, eyebrows bushy, eyes blue, remarks, scar upper lip.
He was given a ticket of leave on 8 August 1854, and a conditional parole on 17 July 1855. The conditional parole allowed Cornelius to go anywhere he desired, except back to Ireland and his family. The transportation sentence amounted to a permanent exile from his home country.
Despite a difference in implied age I am relatively confident that Cornelius Bresnahan who was transported to Australia was in fact also the brother of Edmond and John Bresnahan.
