Note: My mother's father was a great man. He was a kind, gentle, loving man whose family meant everything. He doted on his grandchildren and made every one of them feel special.
Instead of punishing someone when they did wrong he would speak to them in a conciliatory tone of voice and tell them how disappointed he was in them. By the time he was done you wished that he had uprooted a tree and beaten you silly with it.
Over the course of his life he worked as a general laborer, private detective, exterminator and handyman.
For reasons unknown to anyone, he was thrown out of his father's house around the age of 16, and struck out on his own.
He is buried beside his wife, whom he adored, in St. Isidore's Church cemetery in Bethany, Illinois.

Note: My mother's mother worked for many years in the Notions department of Famous-Barr, a large retail store in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a good seamstress and made almost all of her own clothes.
Grandma was also an artist, working in crayon and oil paints. A couple of her pictures survive and are in the homes of various of her children. She also played the piano.
She is buried beside her husband in St. Isidore's Church cemetery in Bethany, Illinois, not far from where she was born.

He collected recordings of the Big Band era and after retirement had a shop for a short while where he bought and sold these recordings. In his youth he also played semi-pro baseball and was a professional bowler.
