Note: Michael and Catherine lived in Moultrie County, Illinois, until their house burned down. They then moved, I think to a farm near Defiance, Ohio. This house burned down in 1932 and they moved into the town of Defiance, Ohio.
The following is abstracted from an e-mail form Rob (Robin) Homer, great grandson of Michael and Catherine Ryan. It may explain why the Ryans kept losing houses.
I received your e-mail about the updated web site.... Thanks... I wanted to add something that was passed down through the generations....Catherine Tueth who was married to Michael Ryan was apparently the reason their homes burned in Illinois and in Defiance, Ohio.... I was told that when she stoked their stove to get the flames going (the cast iron type which also served as a source of heat in their farmhouses in the winter), she sometimes stoked the flames so hot that the cinders going up the chimney and out would still be burning.... which was the reason the farmhouses burned.... Interestingly enough, I was told that she liked to stoke the fire nice and hot which is understandable for cooking and such but she would sometimes lose caution on doing this.....
