His father took him to Macon County, Illinois, in the 1830's. He had only about six weeks of schooling. He farmed and raised stock, living on a farm about 2.5 miles southwest of Elwin.

Just before the Civil War broke out his uncle, Aaron Craycroft, called a note for about $300, forcing him to sell about 600 bushels of wheat at $.50 per bushel. In short time war broke out and wheat went to $3 per bushel. (Harry Craycroft, Vandalia, IL.)

According to the 1860 Census of Macon County, Illinois, there was a William P. Craycroft (could be an error hearing incorrectly or in transcription), age 29, listed as a farmer, and born in Maryland. These details fit a description of William Benjamin Craycroft. (Robert Lynn Craycroft)

According to the same Taxpayers Lists William B. Craycroft paid taxes on property in South Wheatland in 1865. In 1866 William Craycroft paid taxes on property in Decatur, and William B. Craycroft paid taxes on property in South Wheatland. (Robert Lynn Craycroft)

Title: Submitting Will to Probate in death of Dora B. (Craycroft) Craycraft
Publication: Dated February term, 1902
Media: Official Document
Cause: Pulmonary tuberculosis
Reference: 145
Note: Dora was probably born on the old Craycroft farm about three miles southwest of Elwin, Illinois. She became affected by tuberculosis when about 16 years old. She was never really well after that and it eventually caused her death.

She was taken to Florida for her health in January, 1884, by her father, who placed her to board with Mr. and Mrs. John Craycraft, who by coincidence had almost the same name. There she became acquainted with the sons of the Craycraft's, and she and Edgar Craycraft fell in love. They were married several years later, on Dec. 18, 1894, at the home of her father.

After spending the winter of 1894-95 in Florida the couple returned to Illinois, where Edgar rented an 80-acre farm a mile east of Boody from his father-in-law. They lived on this farm, except for several winters spent in Florida, and the winter of 1900-01, which Dora spent with her brothers at Gueydan, Louisiana, until her death on Feb. 8, 1902. She died in the the farm home east of Boody and was buried in Mt. Gilead Cemetery. (unknown)
