GEDTable Final Version 2.1!!
This page is for comments received from Individuals who were kind enough to send them to me!
From Roger (12/28/99):
"Sorry to bother you, but I somehow ran accross your program and I like
it. However when I downloaded the program and the two files: GEDTable.css and GEDTable.Html and put them in the same directory with my GEDTable.txt file this is what happens when I click on the Html.
1. It come up with the table and looks just fine, when I click the name box at the upper right I see just one name "CRAWFORD" When I click the right arrow to go to the next this is the message I get:
A runtime error has occurred
Line 42 Error: The operation requested by the application is not allowed if the object is closed.
2. Then the Debugger program comes up and shows:
An exception of type 'ADODB. Record set Then closed' was not handled.
3. Highlighted in yellow is: If GEDdata.recordset.RecordCount > 1
4. Then Last but not least when I did get the program to work some it showed the wrong parents or the wrong children for the parents??
So I was not able to use the program yet as I am not knowledgeable =
enough to correct the program."
It seems issues 1, 2, and 3 have something to do with the HTML file that was downloaded. I looked into the file to see what was the problem, however when the 2 files are used with the HTML file at: http://www.cobnet.com/Programs/GEDTable/GEDTable.html, these problems did not occur for me. If someone else is having these same problems, please try this file first and let me know if they are still occurring for you.
Issue #4, reloading the Borland Database Engine seemed to fix this issue.
This lady found a programming error on my part which caused me issue Version 1.1 immediately!
From Ann:
"I took a quick look at your program. I don't have IE, so I
can't see all of the features, but I thought I'd give you a little feedbank on
some things I did notice.
I do like the layout.
1) The Install program doesn't allow me to pick my own directory. I'm very
short of space on the default drive, so I usually pick a different drive.
2) Some dates don't fit in their boxes -- eg 22 SEP 1868 loses the last digit,
although 15 FEB 1858 fit OK.
3) The Go To search is case sensitive -- I'm used to typing everything in
lower case now for Internet searches etc, so my personal preference would be
case insensitive.
4) There were quite a few instances where the children and other relatives
were incorrect. I can send you my test GEDCOM if that would help. One case was
my mother, who has more than one marriage if that's a clue. Her husband's
parents and grandparents showed up instead of her own. It's possible that all
the errors are a cascade effect from one particular case."
Issue #1, sorry I am unable to correct this due to that I have lost the source code for this program.
I have fixed issues #2 and #4 in version 1.1.
Issue #3, please read last entry on this page.
"I checked out your latest version and all the relationships look fine now. As far as the
other changes are concerned, that's just one person's vote."
Thank you Ann.
From Mark:
"When I sort by Name I expected the text file to be alphabetical order, it
is not. This causes a problem if you option statements for all your
surnames."
It appears that the ActiveX Control that uses the data from the text file is case sensitive also. So a name such as, Baker and BAKER, will not be the same. The Web Page that GEDTable makes uses the Tabular Data Control. This control comes standard with IE 4.0.
Thanks for all the comments, they are definitely welcome!!
