Services for Mrs. Isabelle Lewis of 1226 West 103 St. Los Angeles, were held
at W.A. Brown Funeral Home with Rev. E.O. Forde of Sunnyside Baptist Church
officiating. Interment was at Inglewood Park Cemetery. Mrs. Lewis was born
at Doniphan, Mo in 1860. She moved to Texas where she was a member of the
First Baptist Church. In 1925 she moved to Los Angeles.
She is survived by 5 sons and 5 daughters: Mrs. G.R. Woodard of Toler, Texas,
Mr. E.V. Lewis of Fort Worth, Texas, Mrs. H.G. Smith of Tallulah La, Mrs.
J.G. Windsor of Little Rock Ar, Mr. W.M. Lewis of Little Rock Ar, and Mrs.
Bessie Morris, Mrs. H.R. Ramsey, Comer, Raymond and Darrell of this city;
three sisters, three brothers, 24 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

at the home of her son, R.W. Bell, here of a stroke suffered some time ago.
Buried Oakridge cemetery Sunday afternoon. Rev. S,A, Wilkerson of Baptist
Church officiated. Life long member of Baptist church. Native of Ripley
County, born 1843 of French blood on her father's side. Married at age 18
and had 11 children, 10 living, 6 daughters and 4 sons. Those present for
funeral were R.W. and George Bell, Mrs. Tory Lowe, Mrs. John Lewis and Mrs.
Drusie Sandlin. Others could not come.

Funeral services at Baptist Church here in Doniphan Saturday and burial in Oakridge Cemetery. He was 78 years of age and a former resident and a minister for 47 years. Also left son Winfield. (Died 1947) Funeral services will be held today for Mrs. Betty (Granny) Thomas, widow of the late John H. Thomas, who died at the home of her daughter following an extended illness. She was 95. The funeral will be held at 1:00 this afternoon at the Old Gibson Primitive Baptist Church. Rev. T.M. Blackburn and Rev. Lemuel Ruston of Waverly officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Gibson Cemetery. Mrs. Thomas was born in West Plains Mo, January 2 1852, the daughter of the late John Comer and Ruth Baker Lewis. Her father was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh during the Civil War, where he spent 1 year as a member of the Confederate Army. While away at war, her mother died and she was the sole responsible one to care for the family. One of her own experiences was to accompany her aunt on horseback from their home in West Plains to New Madrid Mo, a distance of 140 miles, for salt for the family. During their overnight lodging in a barn enroute the horse of the aunt was stolen by the Federal Troops stationed nearby. The next morning the aunt went to the commanding officer and got the horse back. Soon after the war she married and moved to Humphreys County near Centerville, moved then to Waverly where she spent most of her life until they moved to Humboldt in 1913. She was a member of the Old Gibson Primitive Baptist Church. Her husband preceded her in death in 1921. She leaves 2 daughters, Mrs. C.K. Daniels of Humboldt, Mrs. C.M. Branch of Milam, 5 sons, W.E. and L.C. Thomas, both of Humboldt, J.C. Thomas, of Waverly Tenn., L.L. and E.B. Thomas, both of Memphis, Tenn. and 2 half brothers, Sam Lewis of Detroit Mich. and George Lewis of Truman Ar. She also has 54 grandchildren, 80 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren. |

The Prospect-News, 4 Nov 1937, Thursday Mrs Margaret Cotton, died (1 Nov) in Little Rock Monday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs Bee Cotton Thomas. She was 83. Born in Tenn but lived in Ripley County over 50 years before moving to Little Rock to live with her daughter. A Baptist since age 12. On 10 July she fractured a hip and after sometime in the Baptist hospital in Little Rock went home. Buried yesterday after services at Baptist Church - widow of late Rev Morgan White Cotton. Leaves her daughter, 1 son, James W Cotton, Kansas City, 2 grandsons, Bertran Cotton, Houston, TX and Lindsay Cotton Thomas, Little Rock. |
