The origin is not known. When Samuel Wilhelm Oetter dedicated his 5th piece (play) about 1763, "Munzbelustigungen" to the Count Phillip Andreas Ellrodt, he wanted to know of two knights by the same name (Ellrod) Konrad and Friederich about the year 1269. He was promised a result for his request. A promulgation did not follow. In Giboldehausen in Eichsfeld, Province of Hannover, are families with the name Ellrot since the 30 year war, which are of the peasant (farmers) family and are supposed to be old vassals (Feudal) families. They follow the catholic confession. They only know that their ancestor came from the Franks area around the 16th century. One of the eight families which built two tribes branched out to Berlin. The Frankish (Franconion) line has Jacob Ellrot of Culmbach as ancester.
