Elizabeth is buried next to Reuben, even though he had remarried. The children were very adamant about burying them side by side. They didn't approve of what had happened, and as you can see, her gravestone says she is the wife of Reuben Carlton.
Daniel Stephen Carlton Sr. & Theresa Hilliard Carlton
In the foreground is the grave of Dr. Daniel Stephen Carlton III, who was killed in a traffic accident. In the background are the graves of James Walker Whitice and Louise Carlton Whitice. At their feet is the grave of Janis Smith Maund, wife of Daniel Wallace Maund, son of Louise Carlton Whitice by a previous marriage. An interesting side note is that Elizabeth Crews Carlton set the land aside as a cemetery when her infant son Albert died. The cemetery was next to her home at Ten Mile. She had the first vaults imported and they were marble. They were to be the graves for her and her husband, Reuben Carlton Sr. When he died, she buried him in one of those vaults. It is a beautiful place with many old oak trees bearing Spanish moss. It is quiet and peaceful and far from the madding crowd.
Another view of the Carlton Cemetery, looking north. The grave in the foreground is Dr. Daniel Stephen Carlton III, next to him is the grave of Daniel Stephen Carlton, Jr. Beyond are the graves of the older Carltons, which are on your Web Site. The tall monument is the monument for Reuben Carlton, son of Rueben and Elizabeth Crews Carlton. He died of tuberculosis.
This is a photo of Ten Mile Creek. It is taken from the bridge on Ten Mile Road. The view is looking east, and it is a tributary of the St. Lucie River. The area is now called Eleven Mile and the road is no longer called Ten Mile Road. In modern times, the politicians changed the name. I love that creek and remember the water being crystal clear, when I was a little girl. My family once owned a grove on Ten Mile Creek. There were also hardwood trees, ferns, and cabbage palms on the property. It was a site to see! My Grandmother, Theresa Hilliard Carlton, had a home on this property, but a hurricane took the roof off, and consequently, the house was torn down. After the drainage district put barriers at various places on the creek, one could no longer travel the creek all the way to the St. Lucie River. This made me sad, but it did help to stop the flooding which was very common at one time.
Backus, St. Lucie River - The St. Lucie River runs through a section of St. Lucie County called White City. There is a park on the banks of the river in White City, and at one time, there was a gazebo in the park. When my grandfather, Dan S. and Theresa Hilliard Carlton eloped, they were married there. It must have been very romantic.
