Mr. Stone,
After searching you online, I see you have probably written more articles than one person can read in a lifetime. Very impressive.
I'm hoping you remember the research on John Stone of Charleston, born 1730. Perhaps he is your relative. At any rate, I believe I have linked him to my family tree and I would love to be able to ask you some questions.
Currently I'm working on a research project with Gary Mormino in the Fl Studies Program at USF/Saint Pete. It involves putting into narrative the story of my 9th great grandfather, Francisco X. Sanchez, and his two wives. The first wife, Beatriz, was the daughter of John Stone of Charleston, with his slave, Regina. Beatriz was born in 1749. John wasn't married legally until 1758.
What I have found in researching African American geneaology is that people from the white side of the family often fail to respond to inquiries. Since you obviously are a historian, I hope you can help me shed some light on this story.
It would be great if you have time for a phone call, but I will be happy to hear anything you may have to share.
Thanks so much,
Dee

Dear Rev. Graham,
I enjoyed talking to you this morning.
I am attaching page 355 from "Citizens And Immigrants - South Carolina, 1768," which was sent to me by Mrs. Anita Eakin, whom I mentioned. She highlighted pertinent lines relating to the Scooner Duran and Thomas Stone, my ancestor. As you'll read, Charles-Town was a busy port with St. Augustine mentioned. I am also attaching in a separate e-mail page 371. These are the only pages Mrs. Eakin sent me. I do not have the book.
The book about the Low Country is Erskine Clarke's "Our Southern Zion A History of Calvinism in the South Carolina Low Country, 1690-1990,"The University of Alabama Press, 1996.
Sincerely,
Spessard Stone

Spessard,
The pages you sent were great! Seems likely to me that the Stone brothers became active in trading, and that Beatriz may well have gone to Florida with Peter and/or Thomas.
If you are interested in reading about Beatriz, you might want to get a copy of Jane Lander's book, Black Society in Spanish Florida. They should be able to get it for you at the library. Beatriz (Maria Beatriz de Piedra) Stone has lots of references, and there's a list of her children with Francisco X. Sanchez (my 9th great grandfather).
Hope we can stay in touch.
Dee
