W. B. Brown was born Oct. 28, 1835 in Lake City, Florida. On May 23, 1861, he enlisted at Lake City as a 2nd Lieutenant and was commissioned into "C" Co. Fla. 2nd Infantry. He was discharged on May 11, 1862 and was not re-elected. He died on May 30, 1921.

Tombstone of Joseph Howell

Teresa McGowin on Nov. 28, 2008 emailed me that Joseph Howell, a member of Capt. John Lesley's Company, 1st Btn, Florida Special Cavalry, is buried in New Zion Cemetery. He was born June 8, 1847 and died January 29, 1903 in Manatee County. He was married to Julia A. Pass on October 6, 1872 in Hillsborough County. She was born October 23, 1849 and died January 16, 1914. When applying for a pension on October 23, 1907, she gave her post office address as Miakka, Manatee County. Florida Confederate Pension File A00135.


Tombstone of Ransom Ganey

Teresa McGowin also on Nov. 28, 2008 emailed me that Rannsom C. Ganey, who is buried in Lily Cemetery, also served in Company E, 47th Georgia Infantry. He was born July 8, 1844, McIntosh County, Georgia and died October 27, 1911 in DeSoto County. He was living in Marion County in May 1905 and Floral City, Citrus County in November 1909. The pension of Louise, his widow, of Limestone, DeSoto County, was approved by the state on December 20, 1911.

In 1995, Charles Revell to the Cracker Trail Museum in Zolfo Springs donated a plaque containing 53 names of Confederate soldiers buried in Hardee County.
