Rev. J. Newell Hendry Family




John Newell Hendry, son of James Madison Hendry and Mary Jane (Payne) Hendry, was born November 7, 1881 at what is now called the New Zion settlement of Manatee (now Hardee) County, Florida. He died December 19, 1968, Wauchula, Florida with burial in Wauchula Cemetery.

Newell, as he was known, was occupied in various occupations. He was in the mercantile business at intervals, taught four five-month terms of school, and farmed. He served as clerk of the Wauchula Post Office from April 1,1907 to March 1, 1912 when he became the first rural mail carrier out of Wauchula, Florida. He retired from the Post Office June 1, 1944.

Newell was ordained as a Baptist minister in March of 1913. Churches, which he served, included: New Zion, Oak Grove, Pine Level, Bethel, Dry Prairie, Athens, Ona, Lake Buffum and Fort Green. Rev. Hendry was pastor of Fort Green Baptist Church from January 1918 to August 1928 and again October 1929 to September 1952. He performed about 800 baptisms, 450 funerals, and 150 weddings.

He married (1) March 15, 1903 at Duette, Manatee County, Florida, Emma Alice Shuman, daughter of Alfred Franklin and Sarah (Alderman) Shuman. Emma was born January 25, 1884, Duette, Manatee County, Florida and died October 12, 1941, Wauchula, Florida. Newell married (2) in 1942 Essie Shuman, daughter of Alfred Franklin and Sarah (Alderman) Shuman. Essie was born April 23, 1885 and died August 23, 1967. Newell, Emma and Essie are buried in Wauchula Cemetery.

1. Flora Hendry, born March 13, 1904; died July 1976; married in April 1931 Marion Moses Carlton, son of Thomas Stanford Carlton and Flossie Howell Carlton. Flora had 2 children: Thomas Newell Carlton, born May 15, 1932; and Claire Nadine Carlton, born July 10, 1934, Arcadia, FL; died Nov. 19, 1979, Atlanta, GA; buried Sawnee View Gardens, Cumming, GA; married (1) June 21, 1954 at Wauchula, FL Jerry Lawson Tyson; (2) ___________; (3) Jim Shadburn.
2. Sarah "Sallie" Hendry, born May 11, 1912; died Feb. 7, 1979; buried Wauchula Cemetery; married on July 19, 1932 Albert Sidney Waters, son of Francis B. and Mary Waters.
3. John Newell Hendry, Jr., born Feb. 7, 1914; died Jan. 9, 1990; married on Sept. 7, 1934 Iris Smith, daughter of Rev. Henry and Florrie (Bailey) Smith. Iris was born Nov. 26, 1916 and died May 1, 1990, Bradenton, FL.
4. Warren Harding Hendry, born June 20, 1921; died June 6, 1996 at James A. Haley Veterans in Tampa, FL; cremated; married (1) in 1944, Cottye Whitener; divorced; (2) Blanche Waltz; divorced.
