In a letter, dated June 20, 2004, to Spessard Stone, Dr. Canter Brown, Jr., then with his wife, Barbara Gray Brown, residing at 641-92 Fulton Road, Tallahassee, FL 32312, wrote: "We went to Tampa for a day this past week for Jeff Gordon's funeral. I had seen him in February, and he told me then that the doctors didn't give him but a few months. A truly fine and decent man, he deserved far more praise for his research and publications that he ever received. The city did provide some measure of thanks by allowing him to be buried in Oaklawn Cemetery. His grave sits just opposite the celebrated William and Nancy Ashley tombstone. I suspect he couldn't have been happier about it."
