The Family of Johannes Holzer, 1789-1870
of Latterbach, Bern, Switzerland
Husband of Magdalena Siegfried, 1785-1851
Father of Susanna Catherina Holzer, 1830-1877

Magdalena Siegfried's Family

Every Swiss citizen has a place of citizenship where vital record information is recorded. Our Holzers lived in the village of Latterbach in the canton of Bern, but their births, marriages, deaths, and immigration were recorded in both the parish records (Kirchenbuch) and the town records (Bürgerregisters) of Erlenbach, a neighboring and larger town. Therefore, our Holzers are “of” Erlenbach but “resident of” Latterbach. At marriage a woman changed her citzenship to that of her husband, however, the recording clerks noted the bride’s place of citizenship and her parents.

Our family’s surname changed from Holtzer to Holzer in the Erlenbach Town Registers with Jacob Holzer, 1708-1783, No. 07. The surname Siegfried evolved from an earlier Sifert as shown in the Lenk Town Registers.

The source records, both town records and parish registers, are at the civil state offices in the towns named, in the canton of Bern.

Thank you to our Swiss researchers Manuel Aicher of Zürich (1990), Yvonne Gygli of Zollikofen (1991) and Peter Wälti of Münsingen (2009) for the excellent research and translations they did for us in Swiss records about the lives of our Holzer family in Latterbach, Bern, Switzerland. If any of our readers are interested, there are more Holzer records in Switzerland to be found and translated to add to this story.

Rosina Holzer, 1826-1865?
No. 24

ROSINA HOLZER, of Latterbach, Bern, Switzerland, no. 24.1, 2, 3
chr. 07 May 1826, Erlenbach, Bern, Switzerland; “emigrated most probably to America.”
Parents: Johannes Holzer and Magdalena Siegfried, no 16.

Rosina was the oldest of the four Holzer children who emigrated to Ohio, USA, in 1853. She most likely is the “Josephine” listed with her brother Fred in Auglaize County, Ohio, in the 1860 Census. She does not appear in other census records, land records or marriage records, nor was she mentioned in the letters we have between Christian, Fred and Catherina. Rosina probably died between 1860 and 1870.

2. Auglaize Co., Ohio, 1860 census, p657 shows Fred and “Josephine” Holzer in July, 1860. Since Fred would marry Margaret Grassli in two weeks, this must be Rosina, Fred’s sister.
