OUR FARABEE FAMILY HISTORY

Gary R. Kaletta writes:

Some believe early variations of the surname Farabee were Furbee, Furby, and Furbay. Now, other researchers are starting to seriously question the Furbee to Farabee linkage, based upon an examination of some old DE court records. The Furby's we can trace in wills, etc., resided in Kent County, DE from about 1700 to 1790. There is not a confirmed link between the first Benjamin from 1665 and another Benjamin Furby, born 1694, who married Susan Lowber in DE about 1720. Some say this Benjamin came from England about 1717; others say he was born in DE. One of the sons of this Benjamin, Bowers Furbee, became a wealthy plantation owner by 1790, owned a number of slaves, as documented in his will. Another son, Caleb Furbee, was in the French & Indian War and, I believe, in the Revolutionary War.

"Concerning the Furbee line, one researcher thinks it is [derived from] a Frankish name, De Fabre, going back to a Frankish knight who fought for William the Conquerer at the Battle of Hastings in 1066, but almost no citations for any of this data was mentioned. It is said the name is in the Domesday Book, but I could not find it ... the first Furby known of to immigrate, Benjamin, came over in 1665, apparently with a land grant or "patent" from the Crown through the London Trading Company. He supposedly was granted the Island of Kent in Chesapeak Bay.

"Another story says that the family resided on the Scotish border with England, chose the wrong side in Montrose's rebellion, and went to Ireland for a few generations to keep their heads. Some of the Farabee's claim to be Irish, and have many Irish traditions in the family. You would not think that the Crown would be giving a bunch of rebels land in the Colonies, however.

Thanks to Gary Kaletta for this very interesting early Furbee/Farabee information, as well as for some of the dates and locations listed below (those written in parentheses and italics).

Gary further notes that: "Some of my source material, particularily the birthdates of the Farabee branch you are referencing, came from a genealogy published in 1915 by one Louis Thomas Farabee, called 'The Farabee's in America.' Louis's book from Benjamin Farabee on down is very accurate, but his prolog is not. He is the only one who made the claim that the Farabee children were born in DE, as opposed to, say, NC, and he provided NO citations for this ascertation. Louis claimed that Ben Farabee [b.1760], was the child of one Caleb Farabee, of Kent Cty, DE. Going back into the records before the first census of 1790 is difficult, but one thing is for sure, there is NO Farabee there, but there is a Caleb Furbee. So, for years, everyone has assumed that this Caleb Furbee is the same as Caleb Farabee, simply renamed by Louis to fit his version of the spelling, and that Farabee is just another variant spelling of Furbee, as is Furbay, Furby, Furbie, Featherby, and a few others. This is why you will see these references show up in the various databases."

GEORGE FARABEE

George FARABEE was born 20 July 1799 in Bucks County, PA and died on 14 Sept 1877 in Waldron, Platte County, MO. He married Margaret MILLS on 12 January 1832 in Tuscarawas County, OH. It is said that George's parents were John Farabee and Martha (surname unknown) and that John was the son of Caleb Farabee. As was mentioned previously, most researchers no longer believe that Caleb Farabee/Furby was the ancestor of this line.

George and Margaret had at least ten children: John, Hannah, Martha, Thomas, Robert, David, Israel, Margaret, Samantha, and Jackson.

The first son, John, was born in OH and was married to Martha Ann BUCKMASTER on 4 Aug 1853 in Putnam County, Ohio. (Gary has birthdate as 27 Feb in Sparta, Morrow County and notes that he died sometime after 1915 at which time he was living in Squaw Valley, CA.)

Daughter Hannah was born 1834 in Ohio and married Eliott KEENE on 3 Feb 1853. (Birth day and month is 31 May and death occurred before 1915 in Texas County, MO.)

MARTHA FARABEE

Martha was born 26 Sept 1837 in Clay County Ohio. (21 Sept 1836.) She died on 4 June 1895 in Richland, MO. She is buried in the McCann Cemetery on Ft. Leonard Wood Army Base. Martha is my great-great-grandmother. Martha married William Davis BRUMBLE (born 9 March 1838 in Nashville, Davidson County, TN, and died 25 Feb 1879 in Pulaski County, MO) on 14 Feb 1860 in Osage County, MO. Martha told her daughter, Charlotte Mary, that on the Valentine's day she was married, it was snowing heavily and guests came to the ceremony in sleighs with sleigh bells ringing!

Martha's middle name is apparently Brownlee, although no one is certain or knows where the name came from.

Martha and Bill had the following children: John W., Nancy Irene, Charlotte Mary, Augusta Althea, Jesse Adam, William J., John Selvy, and Louis Eugest. You can read about these Brumbles in the Brumble Family History page.

After the death of her husband, Martha ran a boarding house/restaurant in Hastings, Nebraska. Oral family history indicates that at one time, she served a meal to the 25th President of the United States, William McKinley. Another time, her guest was William Jennings Bryan.

The next child to be born to George and Margaret Farabee was a son, Thomas, born in 1838 in Ohio (5 Nov 1837) and died 19 Nov 1882 in Hastings, NE.

After Thomas, Robert was born in 23 Apr 1840 in Ohio. Robert died 1 Oct 1867 in Osage County, MO. He married Elizabeth BRUMBLE (born 1833) on 3 July 1861. Elizabeth was a sister of the above William Davis Brumble who married Martha Farabee.

Another son was born in 1842, also in Ohio, and named David Irwin (birthdate of 24 June and a death date of 22 April 1862 in Newmarket, VA).

Israel Lapin was born in 1843 in Ohio and married Charlette POINTER on 5 Mar 1863 in Osage County, MO. (18 Apr 1844 and died 23 Mar 1876 in Linn, Osage County, MO.)

Next daughter, Margareth, born 1845 in Ohio, married the above Charlette's brother, William Henry POINTER, on 3 Feb 1856, in Osage County, MO. (birthdate of 26 Apr 1846 and she died in CA.)

Daughter Samantha was born in 1850 (birthdate of 26 Apr 1850, Putman County, OH, and she died on 14 Jan 1899, Newton County, MO).

Last born was a son, Jackson Stout, born 12 June 1852, Putman County, OH (he died after 1915, living in Atlantic, IA in 1915). Jackson married Sara J. REED.
