Abraham Cowell was born ABT 1785. It is not known as of 6/16/05 where he was born... or who he was married to. In 1815, the Cowell Family resided in Sherbrooke, Ontario, Canada. It is "implied" that Abraham was married twice, first widowed around 1836, and then again in 1851. His eldest son, Samuel Cowell, it is also "implied" is said to have been his stepson and took the Cowell name. Helen Fortney has searched for Abraham's gravesite all over Haldimand County; in all of the Cowell Plots, Port Maitland, Steen, Dunnville, and in Sherbrooke. So many of the old cemeteries however, are so run-down and overgrown, that it is possible, Abraham's may not be found.
NOTE FROM BARBARA ROADHOUSE OF DUNNVILLE
1828 GRAND RIVER CENSUS RECORDS (INCLUDING SHERBROOKE TOWNSHIP)I don't have anything on Abraham Cowell as it is the Dickhouts that I am
researching, but I did look through Sherbrooke Twp. land records to see if
I could find anything there but I came up empty handed. However the 1828
census of the Grand, which included Sherbrooke Twp. has Abraham Cowell
listed with 2 boys under 16, 4 girls under 16, and one female over 16, head
of household was not supposed to be included in the count, ( in case you
are wondering why no male over 16). I know this info doesn't help much,
but does show he is still living in 1828.
6. Jacob COWELL
NOTE 1:
Jacob Cowell was the "bachelor" brother of Charles Andrew Cowell, who on September 24, 1949 with his brother, purchased land in Dunn Township, and settled and began the Cowell Family Farm on lots 12, 13, and 4 (14?) in the Earl Tract. This was the first land purchased in the Earl Tract.Upon the death of Margaret Smith Cowell, giving birth to her eighth child, Margaret, and the death of her husband and Jacob's brother, Charles Andrew Cowell, nine days later from pneumonia, he became the "watchful eye" for his eight orphaned neices and nephews, the oldest of which was only 14. The children remained in their home, with Uncle Jacob living on an adjoining property.
