I am looking for those related to James Henry Cottingham. I do not have his date of birth/place of birth. He lived in Clark Co., Mo when he married Margaret Ellen Williams of Scotland Co., Mo on Sept. 4, 1870. Their son (my ggrandfather) James Walter Cottingham was born Sept. 29, 1874 in Mo. He married Ferby Elizabeth Sexton. I would appreciate any information on this family.

REYBURN (RAY) COTTINGHAM
CTTNGHMRL@aol.com       Yorkville, IL
I am Reyburn (Ray) Cottingham of Yorkville, IL, a recent subscriber to the Cottingham List. I got hooked on genealogy thru a friend, but haven't been able to devote much time to it. But that will soon change as I plan to retire within the next few months. I have traced back to my ggggreat grandfather Thomas Cottingham, b in Worcester Co. MD, 1800 to 1802. He went to KY, married Lydia McNemar in 1825 in Hamilton Co. IL, and moved to western Peoria Co. IL in the 1840's, where he died in 1874. I have never been able to obtain his parent's names or his exact birth date. The oldest of their 10 children was John Fisher Cottingham, b 1826 in Hamilton Co. IL., who married Mary Jane Kimzey in Peoria Co. Their first son was William Fletcher Cottingham, b 1848 in Peoria Co. William married Belle Lewis. One of their children was Lester Reyburn Cottingham, my grandfather, b 1883 in Peoria Co. Lester married Florence Eden and they had nine children. Their oldest son was Rayburn Lester Cottingham, my father, b 1910 in Peoria Co. He and Helen Ruth Planck were married in 1932, and I am the oldest of their four children.

SUSAN ELLIS PURDOM
Wpurdom@aol.com
I am a descendent of Thomas Cottingham and Nancy Rowe. My initial information came from my grandmother and her mother. Her information is as follows: Thomas Cottingham was married to Nancy Rowe and they were early settlers of Crystal Springs, Copiah County, MS. They had twelve children: Rebecca (my ancestor), John Wesley, Thomas Richard, Francis Mitchell, Giles, Nancy, Cassie, Eliza, Tubert, Cariece, James Rowe and Elizabeth (Betsey).
Rebecca was born March 31, 1799 in SC and died February 22, 1873 near Kilmichael, Montgomery County, MS. She married in 1827 to Frederic Cross, who was born May 27, 1799 or 1801 in VA and died November 04, 1856 near Kilmichael. They are buried in the Friendship Cemetery in Kilmichael. They had five children: Sarah Catherine, Nancy P., Henry Bingham, Lavina Jane, and Cassandra.
Sarah Catherine Cross married Nathaniel Williams and they had ten children: Julia Ann E., Mary Rebecca, Eliza Jane, William Henry, Newton Edward, Sam Peery, Jemima Cassandra, George Robert, Martha Saphronia and Maggie Lou.
Jemima Cassandra Williams married Alfred Louis Seale and they had three children: Alfred Louis, Jr., Catherine (Katie) Maud, and Sam Hill.
Catherine (Katie) Maud Seale married Robert Pearson Ellis and they had four children. The oldest of their children was Robert Pearson Ellis, Jr. and he married Ruth Belford Donald. I am their oldest daughter.

The only information my grandmother and great-grandmother left about the other children of Thomas Richard Cottingham and Nancy Rowe is as follows: John Wesley was married January 07, 1829 to Elizabeth M. Wallace. Thomas Richard was married December 15, 1846, to Martha E. Harrison. Francis Mitchell was married to Elizabeth Ann Thompson, Giles was married March 25, 1830, to Rebecca Mercer, Nancy was married January 01, 1837 to Dr. Ephraim F. Lockwood. Cassie was married to ? Strahan. Eliza was married February 28, 1839 to Milton Kennedy. Tubert never married. Cariece married ? Patton and had two daughters, Anna (who married 1st Harrison and 2nd Cook) and Emma who married Dr. T. P. Lockwood). They had no records of James Rowe nor Elizabeth (Betsey). I have added to this information from 1850 MS Census records and from some information that I received from a Giles Cottingham descendent. I would love to hear from anyone about the Cottingham family. I am particularly interested in documenting the information from one of the cousins on your website linking Thomas Richard Cottingham/Nancy Rowe to Jonathan Cottingham/Margaret Cox.

I have traced much of my family as well as my wife's family back to the early 1600's. The Cottingham connection is from my wife's family. She descends from the George Cottingham via Thomas, Johnathan, and Elisha (brother to Thomas, Charles, William, etc.) I have a web page for her branch of the family noted below - I used the "ged2html" program to put in on the web. I use family tree maker and can send a .ged file to whomever would like it. It seems evident that much of the research is from collateral lines from my wife's - any information any would like to share regarding this would be appreciated. My wife's family is related to most of the state of Delaware with the Tunnells, Rickards,Jones, Thompsons, Derricksons, Bennetts, Furness, Wests, Tingles, Waples, Whartons, Wallops, Wolfes, and others. Her family is from Delaware via Philadelphia. We now live in Hopedale, MA, have three children, and a good life.http://www.kersur.net/~ginorio/krisgen/surnames.htm

My ancestor is Nova "Nora" Madora COTTONGIM ... I do not have much information on her except that she was born somewhere in Alabama. She married Ralph Taylor BROWN and had a child, Willie Mae in 1898. It is only an assumption that they were married at this time as I have not been able to locate any marriage records. She was residing with Ralph, Willie, and my grandmother, Myrtle, in Indiana in 1899.They moved to Missouri and lived there until my grandmother's death on May 3, 1960.

RANDALL MEALS

I am a direct descendent of John Cottingham and Margaret Townsend. One of their sons was Barkley Townsend Cottingham who married Lucinda Hardman in Kentucky and then moved to Monroe County in Missouri. One of Barkley Townsend Cottingham's daughters was Lucinda Mae Cottingham. She married Thomas Owen Meals. Thomas Own Meals is my grandfather's grandfather. I have photo's of both Lucinda Mae Cottingham and Thomas Owen Meals. He fought in the Civil War for the South while engaged to Lucinda Mae and her family aligned with the North. None the less they were married after the war on April 18th 1866. I have a copy of her obituary. One of her brothers was Robert T. Cottingham. (I think the T probably stands for Townsend. I probably have that around here somewhere.) He went to California during the Gold Rush and became one of the founders of Marin County. When he would come back to Missouri my great-grandfather who sit on his lap, play with his gold watch and watch fob, and say "me Bob" because he was fond of his uncle and wanted to be like him. He ended up taking the name Robert for himself and never used a middle name. If he had a different name at birth I have not been able to find it and while all his children were still alive I asked each of them and they new nothing different. Anyway I relate all this because my middle name is Robert and that is from my great-grandfather Robert Meals.

Emma Whitten, daughter of William Riley Whitten, Jr. and Elnora Hill, was my great-aunt. From census records and family, I know that Rufe Cottingham was a twin to Luther Cottingham who married Lydia Ann Wakefield. His parents died between 1860 and 1870, probably somewhere in the Crouse Township of Columbia County, Arkansas and their names are very uncertain. My only clue is a hard to read census record. Rufe was raised by his brother, Isam R. Cottingham, and sister-in-law, Mency Blackwood. I do know he had an older sister, Nancy Cottingham, who married William F. Wingfield. My cousin, Denver Cottingham, married Frederick Jefferson White, and has children living in the El Dorado, Arkansas area. I am wanting to learn more about Rufe's family. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I also have another COTTINGHAM line in my family and I've been told the two are related, but so far I have no idea how. This is J. J. "Jack" COTTINGHAM who married Mary Etta "Etta" McKellar on December 19, 1903 Nevada County, Arkansas. Census records say he was born in February 1879 in Arkansas. There is a J. J. Cottingham buried at New Salem Methodist Church Cemetery, Laneburg, Nevada County, Arkansas. He was born in 1879 and died in 1910, but I am told it is not Jack Cottingham. Mary Etta McKellar was a half-sister to Elnora Hill Whitten and I am related through that link. Etta and Jack Cottingham had two children that I know of: Morrison Cottingham (who is, I believe, buried at New Salem Methodist Church Cemetery) and Jennielinde (as written on census records). Morrison Cottingham went by Mitch and was born in 1907. He died in 1988. I don't know if he married or not. Jennielinde was born in February of 1910. Etta was married four times and Jack was her third husband (others in order: J. W. Mitchell, Robert McNeely, and R. Finis M. Cummings). This is all I know about this Cottingham line, other than that Jack was living in the same house with Etta in 1900 when she was married to Robert McNeely. I am told that Emma (neice to Etta McKellar Cottingham) met her husband while visiting her aunt.
Again, if you can help with this line...thanks in advance.

I have done some research but most has been passed down through the Andrew Cottingham Family book. My grandmother was Mary Belle Cottingham b. 1889 who married Eugene Childs Stanton b. 1890. Her parents were Alexander Jefferson "L" Cottingham b. 1849 and Annie Eliza Jackson b. 1851. His parents were Andrew Cottingham b.1818 married Catherine Sinclair b. 1818 Isle of Islay, Scotland. His parents were Conner Cottingham b. 1797 married Nancy Parrish. Conner's parents were Charles Cottingham married Nancy in 1796. WILLIAM (BILL) HILL
Bill.Hill@pobox.com.au
My research shows that my father's father was a William Cottingham who migrated from Kent, England to Victoria Australia in 1855, and married a Jane Lucy Hill at Beaufort Victoria in 1865. William Cottingham died in 1870. William Cottingham's parents were a William and Charlotte (nee Harris) Cottingham of Milton, near Gravesend, Kent, England. They were married in 1829. There were ten children from this partnership: Ann, Samuel (both born in Grenada, West Indies); Charlotte (died 1833); Mary, Harriet (died in 1834); Jane, William (died in 1837); a second William (my Grandfather); Henry (died 1839) and Elizabeth.
From the Family Bible of William Cottingham, my great grandfather, there is recorded in it the death of a William Cottingham n 1851, aged 62 years. This record states that he was the son of a William and Mary Cottingham of Saint Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, and was born on 8th November 1789. It is this Cottingham that I seek more information. I presume from the Bible entry that he is the father of my great grandfather. I would like the history of this family.

During my research I came across other Cottinghams about whom I am seeking information:

1. Sergeant Wolfran Cottingham, a miller from Suffolk, who enlisted in the 58th Regiment, known as "The Black Cuffs" and  served on garrison duty in the Colony of New Zealand. He took his discharge and a gratuity in New Zealand in 1858.
2. In 1824 the "Barbadian Newspaper, Vol 1 No. 140 reported the death of a Lieutenant Cottenham of the 60th Regiment. This regiment was also known as The Royal American Regiment", "The Royal Green Jackets".
3. The Barbadian Newspaper, Vol 1 No. 160 reported that a Katherine Cottingham left Barbados on the ship "Eliza" bound for Jamaica.
4. During my research of Cottinghams in Victorian Births, Deaths and Marriages, I found a William Cottingham a gardener of Snarforth, Lincolnshire, married to an Elizabeth Bellett of Lincolnshire. He had a daughter, Mary Ann Elizabeth, born at Hawthorn, Victoria in 1860. I am looking for any connection with my William Cottingham.

JAMES and LINDA LUCAS

My ggg-grandmother was Huldah Cottingham. She was married to John Meeks Cates in Bibb County, Al on 6 May 1836. Both are buried in the Cottingham cemetery, a family cemetery located "deep in the woods" near Wesley Chapel and the "old Cottingham place" (that is the name my parents use). My gg-grandparents (John M and Martha F Splawn Cates) along with other Cates and Cottinghams are also located in this cemetery.
It was just recently I made the connection between the Cates and the Cottinghams. Now, I am now trying to find Huldah's place on the Cottingham family tree. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am part of the Cottingham line. 3rd great grandfather was George from Maryland or Penn. born 17 Oct 1770. He married Elizabeth Snider, 4 Feb 1799, in Kentucky. George died 29 Aug. 1859 in Coles, IL. They had 11 children. The 10th child was James my 2nd great grandfather who was born 7 Mar 1819, Indiana. He married Elizabeth Bell 14 Jan 1841 Coles, IL. James died 14 Mar 1898, Taylorsville, Plumas, California. They had 9 children and the last child was my great grandmother Sarah Adelle Cottingham born 26 Jun 1862. I have pictures of a few of their graves, for they were buried in Taylorsville, CA. which is only a few hours from my home. Thank you for such a great web page on my family line.

I was born in Camden, Benton County, TN.  My great, great grandfather David Watson, Jr. married Sally Cottingham. David was born 1797 in SC and died 1855 in Benton County (formerly Humphreys County), TN. Sally was born 1794/1804,died about 1839 in TN (apparently Benton County).
David Watson, Jr. and Sally Cottingham were parents of James, Elizabeth, Isaac, David, John and Mary Jane, all born in TN. It appears, but not proven, that Sally Cottingham was a child of John Cottingham and Mary _______. John was born 1770/1775 in NC and died before 1840 in TN. Mary was born 1775 in NC and died 1846 in Benton County, TN. It also appears, but not proven, that John Cottingham and Mary ______ were parents of (1)William born about 1790 in NC; (2) Levin born 1794/1800, died 1852 in AR; and (3) Sally born 1794/1804, died about 1839 in TN.
I am very much interested in learning more about my Cottingham ancestry. Thanks to Bob Schulz for his website which should make it possible.

TED WALLACE COTTINGHAM
tedc@acsinc.net                  Greenville, S.C
I was born and raised in Georgetown, S.C. and now live Greenville, S.C. Unfortunately, I have only recently acquired an interest in my family's history, long after my Grandmother Mary Lee Cole-Cottingham-Boyd passed away. My knowledge of my family is sadly lacking. My research so far has been limited to talking with older aunts and uncles, visiting the old Salters Methodist Church Cemetery (Williamsburg County, S.C), looking through census records at the county library, and searching the Web. I was very pleased to find Bob Schulz's excellent web site and the mailing list. I have been reading some of the list's archives and have been impressed by the knowledge you all possess.
Very briefly, my direct line history that I have been told or have pieced together is:

Father, Wallace R. Cottingham (1924-living), m Doris Carolyn Campbell
Grandfather Mitchell Carodine Cottingham, Sr.. (1896-1938),m first wife Mary Guess; second wife, Mary Lee Cole
GGrandfather Charles Dewitt Cottingham, born in Marlboro County, moved to Williamsburg County in 1910 (1874?-1936), m Myrian A. Covington
GGGrandfather Jonathan Cottingham (1831?-?), m Caroline ?

As you can see, I am uncertain of GGGrandfather Jonathan and his wife. In time, I hope to learn more of him and his family. From talking with relatives,I know he had two other sons, Hayne (or Haynie) and Wyndham. I believe he was from the Hebron community near Clio. As time permits, I will work in the census records more so that I can hopefully connect with the large body of knowledge that many of you have already assembled on the Marlboro County clan. If any of you already have information on this Jonathan I would appreciate your help. The hunt for family history is a nice challenge but takes more time than I seem to have these days.

My gggrandmother was Mary Catherine Cottingham, daughter of Frances Mitchell Cottingham and Elizabeth Ann Thompson. Mary C. married John Houston McIntosh in 1874 (they are listed in the MS marriages on your website). I have their wedding photos and the Cottingham genealogy up on my website at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/3829/genealogy.html    While I cannot take credit for researching the Cottingham family (I inherited all the information from my grandfather), I do have a great interest in it and continue to share information with my grandfather's103 y/o cousin, Juanita "Burney" Montgomery Lindsey. Her mother was a younger daughter of Frances Mitchell Cottingham, Elizabeth Ann Cottingham, who married George Bratton Montgomery in San Antonio, TX (Bexar Co.) on August 31, 1892

DON CHESNUT
drches01@pop.uky.edu  or chesnut@kgs.mm.uky.edu
I descend from Jonathan Cottingham (b. 1683 MD, d. 1762 MD) and his wife, Margaret COX. Jonathan's parents are thought to be Thomas Cottingham and Mary DIXON and Thomas's father was probably George Cottingham (b. 1615 England, d. 1645 VA). Actually, I descend from this line twice, through Lydia and William, children of Dillon Cottingham and Juliana Murphy. In southeastern Kentucky, this surname became spelled as Cottongim pronounced with a hard "g." I am led to believe that this was how Cottingham was originally pronounced and that Cottongim was a phonetic spelling.  I have a lot of Cottingham/Cottongims in my web database "Our Ancestors" at the address below. I am a new subscriber to this list. Unfortunately, I am looking for information and don't have much to contribute. My only Cottingham is Sarah Cottingham b. abt 1748 m. William Littleton b. abt 1742 in England. They had at least one son named Thomas Littleton b. 1772.

PHYLLIS WOOD

I am descended from Annis (Annie?) Cottingham who married Henry Alford in Copiah Co., MS, May 1, 1825. John W. Cottingham was the witness. Henry Alford recieved a land grant in Yazoo Co., MS in 1833. In YAZOO COUNTY PIONEERS by Betty Couch Wiltshire, p.197, there is the following;

Henry Alford was born ca 1800 in Georgia and his wife, Annis Cottingham was born ca 1805 in South Carolina. They were married May 1, 1825, in Copiah Co., Miss. Annis died before 1870; Henry died after 1870.
Issue:
Tennessee A. - born ca 1834 in Miss., married Marble R. Phillips, June 20, 1852.
Missouri E - born ca 1836 in Miss., married Eli H. McGinty, Nov 1, 1853, in Yazoo Co., Miss.(my g grandmother)
Henrietta - born ca 1840 in Yazoo Co., Miss., married Stephen
Hagan - born Aug. 3, 1854 in Yazoo Co., Miss.
Robert - born ca 1844
Josephine - born ca 1850, married Wm. B. Hagen, Feb. 21, 1870
Helen - born ca 1852
Hattie - born ca 1854

Wiltshire compiled the above info from census and marriage records. Notice that there is a gap of nine years between the marriage date and the first child. I have all of the children of Missouri E. and Henrietta if anyone is interested.
Is this the same person as Anny Cottingham, daughter of Charles Cottingham and Nancy (Conner?)? On the 1850 census of Yazoo Co. Annie is 45 and born in South Carolina. Any information on Annis, Annie, or Anny would be greatly appreciated.

My G/Grandfather lived, left to serve in the war, came back, married and raised a family in this county. His name was Edward Cottingham 1832-1917, son of Elisha (1803-1884) who was the son of Joshua. I believe all three of these men were born in Sussex County, Delaware. Edward married Caroline Glander (1846-1936). Elisha married Mary Betts-1831 Delaware (1806-1847).    Sure would like to meet new cousins and have more information on the family.

I have been out of the genealogy search for about 15 years now and am just getting back into it. I am amazed at how much info is at my fingertips with the help of the Internet. Sure isn't like old times when I had to sit down and write letters and spend a fortune in stamps. I know that my great grandfather Sidney apparently moved to Kansas after some kind of trouble, but do not know what. The spelling of the name was changed after the Civil War, and my mother and grandmother always spelled it Cottongin. I do have some pictures of Sidney and Talitha. Here's some info on my line. I do have more dates and names that I am more than willing to share.

My Grandfather was Albert Oswald ("Jacko") Cottingham born in Australia 18-06-1895 died 6-o4-1970. I am also related to Mr Bill Hill on this list as well. I am searching for any family information as well as photos (in particular) of our branch of the tree and would appreciate any help.

DEREK GILBERT

I'm Derek Gilbert, descended from John Dryden Cottingham by way of his son, Olin Hunter Cottingham (whose picture you can now see on Bob's website--thank you, Bob).  Olin's daughter, Nora, married my great-grandfather, Edward Vernon Gilbert in 1898; my dad, Paul Bailey Gilbert, supplied copies of the photos I scanned for Bob, and also has the Bible that Olin carried through his tour of duty in the Civil War.
I'm still a newbie when it comes to researching the family roots; my dad and my aunt, Marge Laskowski (who I understand has communicated with Bob), have the records and documentation for our Cottingham ancestors.  I'm looking forward to catching up and eventually putting a website together.

I have descended from  Tracy Cottingham (1869), Daniel Cottingham (1821) , Connor Cottingham (1793), Charles Cottingham (1750). I would like more information on the families of Charles, Connor, & Daniel, as well as generations before them.  If I could please.

Chicago is where my grandmother Gloria Edwards Cottingham (Delbridge) was born. Her father Morris Cottingham (Ada June Edwards) was born in Wisconsin around 1823. His siblings are Alice, Sophia, Robert, John, Howell, Mirriam, Cora, and  Emma. Born in WS between the years of 1846-1864. Their parents are John  & Emma Jane (Miller) Cottingham. I am 95% sure that Morris'  grandparents are Robert & Sophia (White) Cottingham. I do have pictures, including a picture of my gggrandparents John & Emma Jane (Miller) Cottingham. I must have a bajillion cousins from WS and IL and would  like to find them. I think this website is terrific; to think were we  all live and we must be related.
But, I do have another favor. One of  my family traditions is that we are supposed to be related to Florence Nightingale (her sister maybe?) and the only clue I have is that it might be through our Cottingham line????????? My mom (Doris Lucretia Delbridge) always said that she and her mother (Gloria) got their red hair from Florence. Many thanks from this websites I
got a lot of  direct descendants after Robert Cottingham.

John Cooper Cottingham came here to Australia in 1840-1. He was a surveyor & engineer& may have been the coroner. Before coming to Australia he lived at Drumalee, Cavan County, Ireland. He was born approx 1800 his wife was Ann Irwin Burrows and their children were; James, Wardlaw, John, Francis, and possibly Thomas before sailing . He is a phantom I have been chasing for 10 years+, although I have a lot of info on him in Aussie,( He's remembered in our pioneers cemetery) his Ireland roots a mystery. He was a Protestant and came from a family with money (he paid his own way here).
J.C.C. was my G.G.Grandfather.

I am a decendant of Joshua Townsend Cottingham, my great, great grandfather. He was born in Snowhill Maryland and married Elizabeth Selby. They came to Indiana about 1822 - 23 and settled in Hamilton County, just north of Indianapolis. Their graves are in the "new" cemmetary in Noblesville, IN. They had two children, Henry Austin Cottingham and Mary Cottingham Schumak. Joshua was the son of Thomas Cottingham and Rhoda Townsend. Thomas' brother, John, married Rhoda's sister, Margret Townsend.

As a descendent of John Atkinson Selby, son of William Atkinson Selby and brother to Barkley Townsend Selby who married two Cottingham sisters, Martha "Patsy" and Sarah S., I am interested in the intermarriages of the three families. At this time, I would like to complete a loose end of my part of the triangle by finding the parents and siblings of Martha "Patsy" and Sarah S. I have quite a bit of Selby data to share with anyone interested and a limited amount of Townsend data.
