South Africa
I am trying to trace details of my husband's family. It seem that they immigrated to South Africa in the very late 1800's. The surname when they arrived in South Africa was Paynter and John Paynter's middle name was Trefusis which he then hi-finated. From what I have gathered from the family bible the family was originally from the Tywardreath area. As I live in South Africa, I am having trouble finding Internet sites to check -

My branch of the Paynters (at least directly) seem all to have been
farmers in N.E. Cornwall, near Launceston.
1. My father was Arthur Paynter (born in Wisconsin, USA)
2. Arthur's father was Thomas Henry Paynter, born April 18, 1848,
at Trengune, Warbstow (baptized Jacobstow May 17, 1848). He emigrated to Wisconsin in April of 1869 with his new bride Annie Northey (of Laneast).
3. Thomas Henry's father was Richard Paynter, b. July 31, 1817, at Benecott farm, Boyton. He married Jane Rice (also of Boyton), and both emigrated to Wisconsin probably in the 1870s (?). Richard died in Wisconsin on Nov. 7, 1889.
4. Richard's father was Joseph Paynter, b. 1791 of North Beer, Boyton. Joseph married Mary Blake (of South Beer) in 1817. They lived at Benecott, Boyton, and are buried at Boyton. Richard died Mar. 18, 1841.
5. Joseph's father was Bernard Paynter, b. 1757 of North Beer, Boyton. He married Sarah _____. Bernard died Mar. 15, 1825.
6. Bernard's father was William Paynter, b. ? He married Anne Lord April 22, 1739 at Boyton.

Charles Paulet, my Great Grandfather, is buried in Kilmington. The Churchyard is next to the Manor House at Kilmington, Wilts., which was his address. The Manor House is decorated with the Arms of the family, as is the Church, next door, which he supported. He shares the largest headstone in the cemetry with his father, George William Camborne als Paynter, Vicar of Totnes Priory in Devon.

My great grandparents (father's side) were Paynter. My father's mother was Marie Alice Paynter Finley. Her parents were Dr. Lawrence Winfield Paynter and Margaret Maud Stratton Paynter. I've traced my Paynter ancestor to a John PAINTER who fought in the American Revolutionary War. He came over as a Hessian solider to fight for the English, but once arriving, he changed sides

JOHN (or Jonathan) PAYNTER married Elizabeth PERKS at Redruth, Cornwall, in 1734. They had 4 sons baptised at St. Uny, Redruth between 1735 and 1741. This is the family who went to Amlwch, Anglesey, "to see about some mines" probabaly in the late 1760's. The copper mines there were not discovered until 1768 and the earliest Paynter reference in the Amlwch area is for Jonathan's son Andrew in 1770.
A descendant, my ggggrandmother was ELLEN PAYNTER (C.1766-1849 in Amlwch, ANG, Wales.)
She married JOHN HUGHES (1758-1845Amlwch) before the birth of their first son in 1800 (he was also a JOHN HUGHES). Her husband was Captain of the Brig "Agnes" sailing out of Amlwch, and they are both buried in the St. Eleth churchyard at Amlwch.
We know that ELLEN'S father was WILLIAM PAYNTER (bap. 1741 in Redruth),one of the four brothers who left Cornwall around 1760 to go to Anglesey. The brothers were: (1) ANDREW (bap. 1735) m. Catherine COX (father Joseph Cox, a customs officer in Pwhelli); Andrew also became a customs officer. (2) THOMAS (bap. 1736) (3) JOHN (bap. 1739) (4) my WILLIAM PAYNTER (bap.1741). I am anxious to find the name of the wife of WILLIAM PAYNTER, who would be the mother of my ELLEN PAYNTER.
A daughter of ELLEN PAYNTER HUGHES was ANN(E) HUGHES, who married her second cousin ZACCHEUS PAYNTER (1780-1830), himself an excise officer, and considerably older than his bride. Their children (all born in Anglesey) were: Margaret (b.1813); John Wynne (b.1815); William Cox (b. 1817); Thomas (b.1820); Joseph Cox (b.1823); Andrew (a twin to Joseph); Ellinor/Ellin (varies) (b.1826) ; Ellen (b.1828); Ann (b. 1830)--9
children born in 17 years of marriage. The father of ZACCHEUS PAYNTER was ANDREW PAYNTER, one of the 4 brothers from Cornwall, married to Catherine Cox. Andrew and Catherine seem to have had 6 children, Zaccheus being the oldest. Andrew's 2nd son was a JOHN PAYNTER (d.1843 in Amlwch, Anglesey), and he perhaps married a Margaret (?). In the 1841 census he was described as a corn and timber merchant and living at Maesllwyn, a substantial house. He probably had no sons as he left the house to his nephew JOHN WYNNE PAYNTER. Perhaps a widowed daughter of JOHN PAYNTER was MARGARET GRIFFITHS, as she was in possession of the house by 1851. By 1861 JOHN WYNNE PAYNTER has the house at Maesllwyn, and he became a prominent merchant and magistrate.

Paynter Family of Amlwch, Anglesey. (See above)
Does anyone out there have any Fodens or Paynters on their family tree?
I'm particularly interested in descendants of William Foden (monumental mason) who married Marie Paynter in 1883 and had a daughter, Marie Hilda, born in Withington in 1884.
(Marie Paynter was originally from Amlwch, Anglesey.)
The 1891 census has Marie Hilda visiting her maternal g.parents in Widnes. Did she have siblings? Did she marry? Don't know where to look for William/Marie in 1891 as they're not at the Withington address. Do these names ring any bells??
