ROCHE -- Deanery of St. Austell. -- Roche was so named possibly from its remarkable rock, a vast mass of schorl, standing alone on the moor. On its summit are the ruins of St. Michael's chapel (14th century) that is locally said to have been built by the last male heir of Tregarrick (on which manor the rock lies), who, weary of the world, lived here in solitude. Here Tregeagle still seeks occasional refuge from his ghostly pursuer. The church was restored in 1890. In the churchyard is a fine four-holed cross in good preservation. About a mile north of Roche is a holy-well, where was formerly a chapel and a figure of the saint. A little farther north is a pool, the water of which may easily be made to flow into streams running either to Par, Falmouth, or Padstow.

Part of Hensbarrow hill is in this parish.

The shallow workings of Great Beam Mine (now abandoned) are believed to date at least from the time of Henry VII.

The principal industry of the locality is the winning and preparation of china clay.

ST. AUSTELL* -- Deanery of St. Austell. -- Hensbarrow is situated at the extreme northern boundary, 1,026 feet above the level of the sea. At thebeacon on this hill the parishes of Roche and St. Austell meet.

* The parish is now divided into two, Urban and Rural
