JOSIAH DODDRIDGE

 

Josiah Doddridge, an early Rome Township magistrate, manufactured powder from saltpeter leached from the dirt of the peter caves. His brother, Enoch, taught the first school in the township in 1815. Fifteen

pupils attended in a cabin of poplar logs which had a dirt floor, no ceiling, but the roof and seats of slabs.

Josiah's parents were John Doddridge (1745-1791) and Elizabeth Schrimplin (b. 1761). Their 1778 marriage, second for John, saw thee children born: Josiah,1778: Elanor,1780: Abner,1783: Benjamin,1784:

Enoch,1786: and John, 1789. The Rev. Joseph Doddridge, half brother of Josiah, child of John's first marriage to Mary Wells of Baltimore, is renowned as minister and writer of early Virginia Fronteir History. The family traces its heritage to England and Philip, D.D., minister and writer of sacred religious hymns. (There is a picture of Jesse Corn and Sarah Doddridge)

Gallia recorded the marriage of Josiah to Margaret McCoy (FFO #6082), Aug.15,1805. A daughter was killed in an accidental powder explosion. Their son Enoch Doddridge (FFO #6080), lived at Millersport and married Susan Dewitt (FFO #6081), Oct.15,1929. Susan was the daughter of Isaac

Dewitt (FF) #6078) and his wife Mary. Isaac was among the earliest settlers of Harrison Township, Gallia County,Ohio. Isaac's oldest daughter, Hannah, was the first child born in that Township.

Louisa Doddridge (1848-1933) daughter of Enoch & Susan, was married to JESSE CORN in Lawrence County, Ohio, Jan.20, 1867. JESSE, Son of JAMES CORN (FFO # 4566) and Margaret HIGGINS, Grandson of GEORGE CORN (FFO #4564) Revolutionary War soldier and DOLLY LITTERAL (LUTTRELL), served in the Civil War and resided in ROME TOWNSHIP.

The son of JESSE & LOUISA, John A.C. CORN, was a baptist minister and married Florence Holroyd, 1898. Florence Holroyd (b.1881) was the daughter of Martha Told & Oliver Cromwell Holroyd. Martha Told was the daughter of of Joseph and Mary Davies Told, both born in Wales.

Frankie Corn (1901-1973), daughter of John and Florence Holroyd Corn was married Jan.29,1919 to William Brammer. William a carpenter, lived beside the Rome Methodist Church for many years and served on many public duties.
